Animal Experimentation 2 Essay, Research Paper

Lab experimentation involving animals is inhumane. Animal testing is cruel because an animal s life is just as important as a human s life, people are exploiting animals, and animal testing doesn t show whether or not a product is safe for humans.

In laboratories around the world, scientists test a company s product on animals. Why do these companies test their products on animals? Many scientists would argue that it s more cost-efficient to test products on animals than on humans. Others say that they experiment on animals because animals are not as important as humans, which isn t necessarily true. Why should humans risk the death of animals for their own benefit? What makes a human s life any more valuable than any other creature s? Every creature on earth has one life to live, a common bond that all organisms share. Who is to say that one creature should have his one life taken away from him? This is different from eating another animal for survival purposes. Scientists do not need to test their products.

People are exploiting lab animals because of their inability to communicate with humans. The prominent English philosopher Jeremy Bentham, when commenting on animal testing, is quoted as having said, The question is not can they reason? nor can they talk? but can they suffer. The answer to his question is yes. Historical information from animal observations show that animals do, in fact, suffer. Because of an animal s inability to communicate or reason, does that mean that humans have the right to decide their fate?

Testing a company s product on animals doesn t mean that it will necessarily be safe for humans. For example, the drugs Oraflex, Selacryn, Zomax, Meritol, and Suprol have produced side effects, even death, in humans. Results from animal testing predicted that the drugs would all be safe in humans. Why should scientists test products on animals when they don t predict safety of humans?

Lab experimentation with animals is wrong. An animal s life is just as valuable as a human s, scientists are exploiting animals can t communicate, and animal testing doesn t prove whether or not something may be safe for humans.

Animal cells and plants cells have many similarities and differences. Some similarities between both the cells is that they both contain a nucleus, which holds the DNA. It is also the control center of each cell. Another similarity is that they both contain a vacuoles. The purpose of the vacuole is to store food or waste. They also both have a cytoskeleton maintains the cell shape, helps move things around in the cell, and moves the cell itself around. Both the animal cells and plant cells have ribosomes to synthesize proteins. They both contain lysosomes to break down and recycle macromolecules, though it is rare for plant cells to have them. Another similarity is that they both have endoplasmic reticulum and both cells use it to assemble proteins and lipids. They both contain golgi apparatus which modifies, sorts, and packages proteins and lipids for storage or transport out of the cell. Both cells contain the very important mitochondria that converts the chemical energy in food to useful compounds. The last thing they share in common is that they both have a cell membrane that regulates materials entering and exiting the cell. Another function the cell membrane has is that it protects and supports the cell.

A difference between an animal cell and a plant cell is that a plant cell has a cell wall. A cell wall are important to plant cells because they are the support and protection of the plant cell so that it can grow upright. It is what keeps it ridged. Another difference is the shape of the cells. A plant cell has a rectangular shape to it while an animal has an irregular shape. The purpose of the plant cell shape it to keep it ridge so they can stack on top of each other to grow upright. While the animal cells are irregular for many reasons. One reason is that so red blood cells can slip through veins and other body parts with ease. Another difference is the size of the vacuole. The plant cell is much bigger because it uses p

Wild Animals, Gentle Women Essay - Critical Essays

The first chapter of the book places the formal study of ethology in the context of human history, establishing a link between early mythology about animals and the development of ethology as a science by Lorenz. The scope of ethology is not clearly defined, however, and the reader is left wondering what ethologists, unless they are like the exceptional women included in the book, actually do. It would be helpful to the young person looking for a career if the book described more clearly the extent and range of opportunities in the field of ethology.

The women’s careers in Wild Animals, Gentle Women reveal how people become involved with ethology and how they learn to cope with the practical problems of studying animal behavior. The author does not attempt to portray the whole life of each woman, nor does she place them in a historical context except in relation to the field of animal behavior. Thus the modern reader may not realize how courageous and socially different some of these women appeared as they embarked on their adventures. Except in her choice of women as subjects, Facklam’s emphasis is on the adventures of these women rather than on their contribution to feminism.

Unsentimental in her observations about animal life and the women who study this field, Facklam nevertheless tends to focus on the positive traits of her subjects, crediting them with bravery, ingenuity, patience, and environmental wisdom, and ignoring any.

ave found many sources telling of the agonizing tests rendered to these helpless animals. I found it very intriguing that many of the authors are scientists themselves, or were scientists at one point in their life.
The first book I came across is, Lab Animal Abuse: Vivisection Exposed! It provides many statistics on the various forms of laboratory animal experimentation focusing mainly on vivisection. First off the author, Joseph Covino Jr. talks about the cruelty and "Devilish Devices" used on laboratory animals. Many of the animals experience a delayed death because they have been subjected to such prolonged experimentation. Then, he tells about the immorality and unethicalness of vivisection. Those animals should be allowed to have rights and justice just as we humans do. This book helps back up my reason that vivisection is cruel and immoral. He not only gives plenty of answers to why and how vivisection is used but he then backs them up with facts and statistics. The next book I consulted was Inhumane Society The American Way of Exploiting Animals written by Dr. Michael W. Fox reads more on a personal note for the author. He gives many stories of animals being tortured by scientists and some of the stories are his. He was a laboratory animal scientist until his beliefs on cruelty to animals changed and he retired. Having a first hand look at both sides of the argument, should laboratory animals be used for research, has given me an insight as to what is really going on, and what I had perceived was happening. The scientists Fox talks about believe that using the animals will be saving a human life and that is more important than an animal's life. He gives details about questionnaires that have been given to groups of scientists asking them about their moral status on killing the lab animals. He has a wonderful input into the morality of laboratory animal abuse definitely worth listening to.
On a different note the book, Animal.
