Communication skills are all around us, from the day we are born until the rest of our lives. How many times have you seen communication skills required for a job in the classifieds and wonder what it actually means. A communication skill is some type of skill used in communication, From talking, body language to even listening. Many things can effect the way one can convey his or her communication skills to others. All of these skills are very personnel to one another. Everyone has different ways of expressing some kind of communication skill within them.

One communication skill is speaking, by far one of the most important skill we posses. To be a good speaker one must be able to convey ideas clearly and briefly. One must also have a clear and pleasant tone to his or her voice. This makes the person you are talking to more attentive, thus, more interested. The speaker must also be aware of his environment and the people he is speaking to. Environment plays a lot with what you say and try to convey to people. If you hear a bird chirping, you might incorporate it to what you where just about to say. This makes the person you're talking to even more comfortable with what you are trying to convey with your thoughts and ideas. This is how different things can effect one's communication skill, speaking.

A second communication skill is body language, a very personal way of expressing yourself without words. One's body language can carry a whole conversation without even saying a word. Sign language is an excellent example of this, one can spend there whole life communicating only with there body. Still one can be able to understand exactly how a person is trying to express themselves. Speaking and body language goes hand to hand, without gestures when talking one cannot truly explain certain things to someone. Also there is no visual effect for the person listening. When there is sound as well as some kind of visual movement one is more interested in what someone is trying to say. Through body language one can tell if a person is sad or happy, glad or mad. Body language conveys a lot of expression to are inner feelings and thoughts. Body language can show many things about you and the way you think. It can also show the way a person reacts to what you try to convey to them. If the listener isn't responding one must try and change the topic without losing the listeners focus. One can only know this threw the listener's body language. Body language is essential to a good way of showing and conveying ones' ideas.


A third and final major communication skill is listening, one of the most useful communication skills. A good listener is someone who can concentrate and not loose focus on a subject. When someone listens to someone sometimes they might start daydreaming or think of something else and loose focus on a speaker's subject. Listening is what connects people together. One "cannot speak if no one is listening," without a listener there would be no need for a speaker. Listening is a skill that takes a long time to develop and to really understand how to listen. One can hear but are they really listening to what is said. One way to make a listener's job easier is to have a speaker who is clear and brief. This way the listener won't drift away and the speaker has stated his or her point. This way the listener has understood what has been said and can make his or her own interpretations. An active listener is a listener who is involved with what the speaker is trying to say. He or She for example may nod, lean forward or make eye contact and Also may take notes. This shows that the speaker has done his job successfully and the listener is responding and being active to what has been said. A listener can be biased and not even listen this does not effect the speaker cause he or she maybe responding to others. These effects show how important listening is to everyone and what an important communication skill it really is.


Communication skills will be around us forever and will continue to thrive and develop as time goes by. These effects on communication skills showed that one can interpret different things threw one's communication skills. As one improves their communication skills it shows us how to talk, listen and communicate better with one another. As the world progresses we will see more people taking more time to develop this skill to there fullest. One will understand to control the effect's communication skills causes and how to handle them.

Also you need to make eye contact with the speaker. This is another way to show that you are paying attention to them. If you fail to make eye contact you may give the speaker the impression that you are not interested in what they are saying. Lastly, you should focus on the speaker and what they are saying. This is the most important thing you can do. You can listen but if you aren't focused on the speaker, you won't get all of the information.

I believe that listening skills are vital to my success because it is a universal form of communicating. Listening is an important tool in communicating with others. In order to answer questions and be apart of group discussions I would have to be able to listen and comprehend the topics. I think the idea of listening has been instilled as an important behavior ever since we were born. Our parents are our first teachers who have taught us the importance of their rules. Living under our parents’ roof meant listening and following their rules. When school starts we are listening to authority figures and have to obey them to stay out of trouble. It is important for people to see others practicing good listening skills because that skill can help them. When parents or teachers don’t practice what they preach the children assume they don’t always have to take mom and dad’s rules seriously. Few people are good at listening because they have been educated about the importance of it. The few people that are educated know the strategies and rules to being a good listener.
3. In your opinion what makes someone a good listener?
In my opinion, someone who seeks to listen to others is a good listener. I think people who like to question and analyze problems are the best listeners. Forming relationships with others requires the development of social skills, a process that begins in childhood and should continue throughout life. These qualities allow communication with others, an essential component of interacting people in a way that brings success in a variety of ways. This paper will discuss some of the skills and personal qualities that are necessary for children to develop in their interactions with other children, the family system, and the classroom, referencing the theories of Erik Erickson and social development.

Personal skills that are vital to the process of developing socially include: the ability to listen to others; the ability to empathize with others; and tolerance of differences between people. These characteristics are essential for children to hone during the process of socialization, because they are skills that will determine the positive relationships they will develop academically, personally, and professionally throughout life. During Erikson’s third stage of development, learning initiative versus guilt, part of what the healthy child learns is to cooperate with others, to lead as well as to follow (Stages of Social-Emotional Development in Children and Teenagers, 2010.)

A child may be accomplished in his or her academic studies, but without the social skills that are necessary to navigate interpersonal relationships, he or she may grow up to be unfulfilled in social and emotional areas. In fact, the realm of social and emotional learning studies the connections between biology, emotions, and intelligence and their relation to success and happiness (Stern.) The education that takes place through social and emotional experiences with others boosts the child’s emotional intelligence, providing a tremendous advantage to his or her futures, both in one’s personal life and in one’s professional endeavors.

For a child to develop the qualities listed above, it is important that his or her family environment support the development of those characteristics. A family can reinforce the establishment of tolerance, empathy, and listening skills by modeling those skills at home. For example, a family that eats dinner together most nights during the week can practice listening to each member and demonstrating an understanding of what is being said by responding to that content accurately. Family members can show empathy to each other by verbally and/or physically comforting each other when difficult issues are being discussed or experienced. Finally, tolerance can be modeled by allowing differences of opinions to be expressed, accepted, and disagreed with in a respectful way. The family environment can provide a safe climate for its members to reveal their opinions, feelings, and beliefs.

In Erikson’s fourth stage of development, industry versus inferiority, during the period that he calls the school age, which can go up to and include junior high school, a child begins to achieve competence in the more formal skills of life, a significant part of which is relating to peers (Stages of Social-Emotional Development in Children and Teenagers, 2010.) This task includes learning to play or work within a system of formal rules, building skills that promote team work. The qualities that a child will develop in his or her interactions with individuals or within the family system are supported by this developmental stage.

If a family environment demonstrates the quality of intolerance to differences of opinion, for example, it may be difficult or impossible for a child to feel comfortable expressing himself, and that child may develop a tendency to criticize others who are different. In the worst-case scenarios, these children may take extreme measures of intolerance by becoming bullies, since they had no one to comfort them or empathize with them in their own family unit.

In the classroom environment, it is essential to establish a tolerant atmosphere where people feel that they are being listened to and respected, so that one particular quality that is essential to provide this is by reinforcing fellow students’ contributions by conveying verbal support or even physical support such as a pat on the back. In addition, a quality that can provide and reinforce tolerance, understanding, and listening skills would be sticking up for the “underdog,” a person who may be isolated and feel like an outcast. Finally, courtesy is an important quality for the classroom so that people feel they are respected and will in turn be respectful.

In addition, within the classroom environment, if someone exhibits a rude or a judgmental attitude towards others, the ability of other students to empathize, listen to their peers, and express tolerance will be inhibited because energy will be used to defend oneself against being attacked. Unfortunately, if this is the tone that is set in a classroom, it can result in an unsafe place where people are afraid to speak out for fear of being rejected, mocked, or seen as lesser than the others. The development of a solid base of social skills will assist an individual in becoming a stable, secure person who will reinforce those same qualities in others. On the other hand, the lack of such skills will produce an insecure person who will tend to avoid others, intimate relationships and opportunities to work with people as a team.

Unlike technical skills employability skills are generic in nature and are necessary for the success of all types of jobs from entry to level the senior most positions.

Employability skills categories:

The employability skills identified by different researchers vary significantly in the way they are arranged. One research group named 36 skills and traits in eight categories known as SCANS (Secretary's Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills); another developer identified 76 different skills in a set of nine categories (Cotton, 1993). Poole & Zahn (1993) also identified 9 keys to employability.

I have considered three skills set identified by Robinson (2000) while adding another category of interpersonal skills due to its significance in the professional world. These categories are identified as;
