Multimodal text can be anything from paper such as a book to digital things like as videos and presentations. Multimodal text allows for students to get their argument across in a more effective and powerful way rather than just writing about it to their audience. We will explore the differences as well as the similarities between the composing process for an alphabetic text between my CDA essay and multimodal text. We will also look at the challenges encountered while composing and the value of multimodal composing.

There are similarities as well as differences between a CDA essay and multimodal text. Some of the similarities involved would be things such as both a CDA essay and multimodal text include a written part to it. Even though the multimodal text required a presentation that included pictures, videos, etc. It still had a written part to it as well to explain your topic like you did in the CDA essay. Another thing that they had in common is that both of my papers involved social media. My CDA essay was about how businesses are using social media to advertise too many different audiences and get their businesses name out there. My multimodal project included social media by using it to teach kids that drinking doesn't make you cool and in fact it actually has a more negative effect on your life than anything mentally and physically. These are just a few similarities that came across the CDA essay and multimodal project. A main difference that occurs between the two is that a CDA essay describes your topic or argument in such depth through words explaining the meaning by unmasking the words and bringing about a deeper understanding or even make you look at it on a different perspective. A multimodal project helps you to get a better understanding of the topic as well but by using things such as pictures, videos, and speech to get the point cross in a different but still detailed way that works better for others learning s

Defining Success

Defining Success

Success is within the mind of the individual. A large portion of ones life is spent working to become successful. People are told throughout childhood to work hard so they can grow up and make lots of money. But success takes many different forms. Different people have different interpretations of what success means to them. For some, success is measured by social status and wealth; for others success is determined only by the amount of happiness one feels.

Money is the main concern for some people. It is a crucial necessity for anyone who is trying to succeed in life. Many believe that the only way to succeed is to have a lot of money. For this type of person, achieving success starts with going to a good college.
It is a competitive job market and if one wants a high paying job he needs some college credentials. College is also said to prepare people to take on the world. Once one has graduated and has a well paying job he is on his way to becoming successful. People work their whole lives making money so they can satisfy their desires. The idea of being able to purchase the items one has always dreamt about is an achievement. People dream about owning a home and having beautiful things to fill it with. Many people take pride in what they possess. People want to own nice homes, nice cars, and nice clothes. Some need to look successful in order to feel successful. These people feel successful when they can admire what their hard work has given them.

For some, happiness is all that matters. Happiness is achieved in many ways, and it doesn’t always involve money. There are many things that contribute to making a person feel happy and successful. One can feel successful without a lot of money at all. For example, feeling loved is something that makes everyone happy. Many believe that without love life is not thoroughly complete, thus never truly achieving success. Ones line of work can also affect how happy he is. Some feel that it is more important to enjoy work and get less money than it is to hate work and get paid more. Another factor in achieving psychological success is ones ability to enjoy what life gives him. There are many qualities of life that are overlooked. Everyone is dealt family and it is important to value that. People who can cherish their families have achieved a form of success.

When two people have a child they feel successful as well in that they have someone to love and treasure. The feeling of being able to love ones own child and pass on wisdom to them is an achievement in itself. Some people enjoy what life offers by acquiring hobbies such as: surfing, swimming, bicycle riding, or any other hobbies that allow one to be active and enjoy the outdoors. Feeling both healthy mentally and physically is a major contribution to one feeling successful. If one can come home from the job he loves, see his loving wife, his loved child, and then be able to sit down, relax and appreciate life than he is successful in his own right.

There are many different interpretations of what success is. Some relate success to money, others relate success to happiness, but it all depends on the type of person.
There is no right or wrong idea of success. Success can only be achieved if one is willing to believe he is successful. There are people who want to give success an exact definition, but the truth is success can only be what one wants to believe it is. Anyone can achieve success it just takes desire.

Defining multimodal composition

“We must recognize that English Departments no longer sustain culture behind impenetrable walls of print. Culture, the product of our human relations, now produces texts in multiple, often overlapping forms. If it has become acceptable to recognize the work of scholars in English Departments who use cultural studies approaches to texts in everything from film to clothing to museum exhibits, it should be part of an English Department’s mission to regard its students as capable of composing intellectual work in forms other than traditional print essays. And we should also recognize that other disciplines across campus are increasingly moving to multimodal texts in their courses and that our students need to know how to write to learn and write to inform and persuade in these forms as well as they do in print. We need to teach the forms of literacy that are producing the culture on our campuses and in our communities.” — Browyn Williams

What is multimodal composition?

Multimodal texts are works that use more than just words and letters to communicate a thought–they may include audio, video, photographs, drawings–basically, any visual element used to supplement the text in some purposeful way. When multimodal texts are viewed, analyzed, and created in the composition classroom, students and instructors are engaging in multimodal composition! Podcasts, blogs, collages, video or audio essays, comic strips, and storyboards all fall under the category of multimodal composition assignments.

Why should we integrate multimodal assignments into the Writ 101 curriculum?

In a broad sense, multimodal assignments can help our students develop visual and digital literacy, which is key in a world where new technologies are constantly emerging. As Williams points out in the passage quoted above, our students are already interacting in digital contexts that require multimodal writing. By assigning multimodal projects, we prepare our students to effectively communicate in these contexts.

In terms of our unique Writ 101 curriculum, multimodal assignments such as the digital Life Place Essay can help us achieve several of the Outcomes for College Writing I, particularly:

  • Genre: students will see how composing a multimodal text differs from composing a written one & gain familiarity with composing in new genres
  • Rhetoric: students will learn key terms & techniques of visual rhetoric, such as juxtaposition, arrangement, framing, point of view, metonymy, and symbolism
  • Purpose: students will explore how shifted mediums can affect their approach to engaging their audience–for instances, how might an image be used to appeal to a viewer’s emotion? To enhance a written scene or description?
  • Collaboration: students will practice new types of collaborative work as they view and respond to each others’ visual texts
  • Process: students will strive to establish an effective process even when composing in new modes through storyboarding & maintaining a Work Log
  • Technologies: students will use new technologies, including audio & video software, recording equipment, file-sharing websites, etc. and develop awareness of how these technologies change their composing processes
  • Conventions. students will work to understand conventions of multimedia genres

Perhaps the most important realization that an individual can make in their quest for personal growth is that there is no single formula that defines the path to personal success. We all have different goals and priorities, which mean that different activities and attitudes will make us feel good about ourselves. So how is it that we can define success for each individual based upon his or her natural strengths and weaknesses as well as inherited personality type? To be successful is to understand what is important to you, to recognize your weaknesses without hiding behind them, to strive for balance as well as open new doors in life.

Each personality type has views on what it is that makes them successful. Often, many people state their views of success based on what someone else’s idea of what it is to be successful. However, among all these ideas of what it is to be successful a common idea is drawn. Successful means being able to understand what is important to you. If we spend our time and effort trying to meet somebody else's idea of success, and ignore or belittle any of our contrasting views, then we will find ourselves exhausted and unhappy. One cannot be successful until they have reached this mindset of happiness; it is not possible for one to be successful unless they are happy with their goals and achievements. Successfulness is the ability to understand what goals you strive for in life, and prioritizing so that you are able to achieve them. Realizing what is truly important to us is a major step towards achieving personal success.

Personal success can be had when one knows their limitations. Being successful means recognizing our weaknesses without hiding behind them. To be successful one must discover who they are as a person and weather or not they make decisions based on thinking or on feelings. Knowing what our decisions are rooted from will allow one to have advantages in certain confl.
