Essay 1: If we were to admit just one more candidate to the Postgraduate Programme (PGP) at the ISB, why should it be you? (400 words max)
What have you done in your life and career that makes you an ideal candidate for admission to ISB? Write your unique story here. You would have already shared information about your academic and professional background through the application. You don't need to repeat it here. Write instead about why you think you will make a good ISB student and a successful business leader in the future. Refer to an incident in the past that highlights your leadership traits. Highlight abilities and traits that make you good at what you do.

Essay 2: Describe your short and long term career plans. How does the PGP fit in with those?(300 words max)
Get as specific as you can get while describing your post-ISB goals - which industry, what role, what level, why? How do you know this is what you want to do? Why do you need the ISB program to achieve your goals?
Make your goals realistic. After working in technology roles for five years, the goal to work in the field of corporate finance might seem unrealistic to the admissions committee.
RECEIVE OUR FEEDBACK ON YOUR CAREER GOALS. We will tell you what ISB will think of your career goals. Send us a brief outline of your career plan in the text box below.

Essay 3: (Optional) Please use this space to provide any other information not covered elsewhere in the application that could significantly impact your candidature at ISB. Note: It is not necessary for you to write this essay. Please use this space only if there is something really significant that you would like us to know. (200 words max)
Don't write this essay unless you have something significant to share which you couldn't share through the other essays. Don't summarize your application and waste the time of the admissions committee.
Address any significant shortcomings in your application through this essay. Make sure you address the shortcoming. Many applicants end up highlighting the shortcoming.
More tips about writing the ISB essays:
1. Stick to the word limits. The online application will not accept a word more. In fact it will count hyphenated words as two words.
2. Fill your application form before you write the essays. You will know what information you have already shared through the application so you won't repeat it in the essays.
3. Rarely should objective information be shared through the essays. That should go in the application form. That you studied at IIT, worked at IBM, the admissions committee would get to know through the application form. You don't need to reemphasize them in the essays.
4. If you do not have community experience, don't be compelled to create a fictitious involvement in an NGO or make false claims about educating your domestic help's child. ISB will not get impressed by these statements. They want to see your leadership potential through these involvements, which you may find difficult to cook up if you haven't been through them. So resist the temptation to do so. Focus instead on showing who you are and what you have done. Be assured by the fact that a large number of successful applicants at ISB do not have significant community experience.

Important note regarding choosing the right ISB deadline.
There are two deadlines - Round 1 deadline is 15 October 2016 and round 2 deadline is 15 January 2017. What is significant though is the date by when you need to decide to accept the offer of admission from ISB. Round 1 deadline is ideal for you if ISB is your first choice school. But if you are not decided and may want to hear from other schools in India or abroad before deciding to go with ISB, you are better off applying in round 2. If you apply Round 1 you need to accept the offer for admission by third week of December by when hardly any other schools would have released their decision on your application. You can of course accept the ISB application and let it go if you get selected at another school but this strategy will set you poorer by the non refundable admission fee you would need to pay to confirm your admission at ISB. Therefore, choose the round to apply wisely.

Indian School of Business continues to thrive and improve the career prospects of its graduates. The class of 2015 received 20+% more job offers this year compared to just 2 years ago, with the largest percentage of the class entering the consulting industry (28%) with global firms such as McKinsey, Accenture, A.T. Kearney, and KPMG. The e-commerce industry was the second strongest, with 15% of the class entering this field with companies such as Amazon and Flipcart. For applicants interested in consulting, general management/strategy, and sales/marketing, ISB certainly offers strong career placement upon graduation.
ISB has changed its application essay questions slightly this year, reducing the required essays to just 2 and eliminating their own guidance in how to answer essay 1. No longer are applicants offered an explicit opportunity to describe their risk-taking or exposure to diversity – though applicants may still choose to share one of these in the 200-word optional space.
Here are this year’s questions with my advice in blue:
If we were to admit just one more candidate to the Postgraduate Programme (PGP) at the ISB, why should it be you? (400 words max)
Last year’s essay prompt started out similarly but then guided applicants to share the personal or professional achievement that they were most proud of to earn that coveted seat in the class. This year, the applicant gets to decide what evidence will best persuade the admissions committee of their worthiness. Frankly, your greatest leadership experience or largest impact are most likely still the ideal way to win the adcom’s attention here.
Describe your short and long term career plans. How does the PGP fit in with those? (300 words max)
MBA programs ask this question to make sure that your goals are reasonable: can their program prepare you for them and has your career so far positioned you to achieve them? If the answer to either of these questions is no, then they cannot accept you – you will simply be unhappy when you graduate – so speak with recent graduates about their recruiting experiences and take the initiative to speak with post-MBA professionals with 10 or more years of experience about longer-term career options. In particular, ISB’s recruiting for the finance function has certainly shriveled over the years – down to just 4% of the class in 2015 – so anyone with a mediocre GMAT score and no experience in this field would best not discuss an aspiration in finance.

It is difficult to believe that 700 words allowed for the required essays is enough to capture who you are and why ISB should admit you. If possible, I recommend using this space to share evidence of your initiative, risk taking, or international experience (bonus points if your story can cover more than one!). And be sure to use all of the characters allowed in the Professional Experience section of the application (since ISB does not even allow a CV upload with your application!): five 100-character lines describing your job responsibilities and – even more important – five 100-character lines describing your initiatives and achievements for each role.
The only comfort in such a short application is that your fellow applicants are just as limited in how much they can share!

If we were to admit just 1 more candidate to the Postgraduate Programme (PGP) at the ISB, why should it be you? This is your selling pitch. The school requires you to display your ability to stand shoulder to shoulder with current students/alumni. How do you stand apart - in terms of your calibre, accomplishments and possible impact as ISB student and alumnus. Dig deep and think of something that is truly yours and that ISB would value. Something that you can speak passionately about. Explore your finest accomplishments, your larger than life interests, or your deepest desires for which you have worked relentlessly. You might come up with just one such thought or you may have 2-3 such anecdotes. Doesn't matter as long as you can back these qualities with objective data or examples or stories and make a crisp argument. Do not forget to establish a direct connection between the qualities you choose and ISB's academic and non-academic resources elaborating how exactly you will contribute to experiences of the student body. Your strengths must correlate with the notion of competency as follows.
Goals (300 words)
Describe your your short and long term career plans. How does the PGP fit in with those?Short term is typically up to 5 years and long term means 5-10 years. Give an idea of what your ultimate vision is, (designation and industry). Highlight your present competencies and think about what would be your first job after MBA, and then move into the details. Understand and communicate exactly how each step leads to the next, and why they are important pieces of one bigger vision. Be incredibly specific. Do not skimp over details and assume the reader knows what is what. Explain methodically. Second, how will ISB PGP program help you achieve your goals? Consider the following examples:

ISB Essays Questions 2016-17 (For ISB Class of 2018 and ISB Intake 2017):
This year the ISB application has 2 mandatory essays, 1 optional essay and 1 additional essay for re-applicants.
The ISB Essay topics for 2016 are as follows:
If we were to admit just One more candidate to the Postgraduate Programme (PGP) at the ISB, why should it be you? (400 words max)
The admissions committee wants you to tell about aspects about your profile that most other applicants cannot describe. If someone else can tell the same story, don’t write about it. Hence, pick the most unique situations and impacts.
The main objective of this essay is to gauge what value-add will you bring to the ISB community that will enhance the value of both in-class and outside classroom experience for your classmates. Look at your resume and identify how you have differentiated yourself: have you earned fast promotions? made significant business impacts? built teams of unprecedented success? Identify the top few – those that best demonstrate your achievements and impacts – then describe them briefly.
Some unique points could include-
– Your in depth industry knowledge
– Your unique professional background eg. cartoonist
– Your wide range of interests like taking initiatives or adding value in community through social work along with corporate job
– National level sports player
For each point, use examples to make a strong argument. Also, try and link these with the resources (clubs, courses, etc.) available at ISB elaborating how exactly you will contribute to your peers at ISB.
Describe your your short and long term career plans. How does the PGP fit in with those? (300 words max)
This is a clear goals question with focus on how an MBA from ISB will help you achieve these goals. The idea behind such a question is to judge candidates from the perspective of clarity of goals and purpose of an MBA.
This is an extremely important question and hence it is important to have a clear and well researched answer in place. Whether your goal is to continue in the same industry/function or to make a switch, there should be a clear identification of gaps between one’s previous professional experiences and goals for the future and it should all be knit very logically with an MBA from ISB serving as a bridge.
A great essay is the one that manages to clearly link the three aspects –1) career goals 2) past professional knowledge 3) why/why now MBA and why ISB.
Career Goals. It’s good to be realistic about your goals and hence it would be great if you talk to alumni and do research on school website to align your goals with the positions offered at ISB. To discuss the development of your career you should emphasize briefly on how did your experiences shape your goal and how do they reveal the appropriateness of your goal. It should highlight on how you developed this goal, why it appeals to you and how an MBA from ISB will contribute to your goals.
If your goals are very different from what you currently do, devote space to explaining how you have prepared for the career change, why you are suited for this work, and how you have discovered that it is a fitting career for you.
Imp: Many candidates are given the feedback that they got rejected because their goals were very broad and generic. Hence, it is critical to explain your goals in detail getting into the depths of the industry scope, role, etc.
Career Progression: AdComs are seeking applicants with clear paths behind and before them. You may have worked for a few companies and held different roles, but it is important to explain “how each one added to your professional knowledge”.
Why ISB. Finally, this essay demands that you explain how ISB – better than any other business program or career move – will help you prepare for those goals. The purpose is to convey the message to the AdCom that you are making an informed decision in applying to ISB. Explain how specific learning from the ISB PGP will enable you to attain your goals – make a mention of specific courses, clubs etc at ISB. In case you have interacted with ISB alumni or attended ISB information sessions or scheduled an ISB visit – mention how your decision to apply to ISB has been influenced by these events.
Essay Question – 3 (Optional)
Please use this space to provide any other information not covered elsewhere in the application that could significantly impact your candidature at ISB.
Use this essay to highlight something significant not covered in the previous essays. Share an extracurricular or professional experience that further demonstrates your exceptional qualifications and ability to contribute both to ISB and a recruiting company in the future. This essay should not be wasted giving justifications for a low score in a particular academic year. Instead, use this to highlight on your strengths. The same has been emphasized by ISB on several admission sessions. In case you don’t have one central theme, limit the essay to explanation of 2-3 important points.
