• The Undergraduate Student Research Paper Certificates of Excellence winners will be selected by the Program Committee of the Association.

• In special recognition of high-quality research papers presented by students at the Annual Meeting, the Program Committee for the Annual Meeting shall evaluate these papers for the purpose of awarding Certificates of Excellence. The awards shall be based on both the quality of research and excellence of presentation. Only on paper per author shall be eligible to compete for any given year. This paper will be so designated on the abstract form.

To be eligible for consideration a student must be:

• Actively engaged in a college program at the time the abstract is submitted
• The senior author and the person presenting the paper

The number of students selected to receive Certificates of Excellence shall not exceed 15 percent of those students presenting papers at the annual meeting

WHAT IS REQUIRED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE COMPETITION

To take part in the competition, it is necessary to submit your paper at the website. Ask your student buddy to help you fill in the form as it is in Russian.

Deadline for submitting papers is usually in late October or early November. Follow announcements on HSE site for information on deadlines.

Results of the competition are usually announced in December. Collection of the winning papers is published after each competition. Winners also receive various prizes.

REQUIREMENTS FOR PREPARING RESEARCH WORKS

  • Remove the names of the authors, co-authors and academic supervisors from the text, headers, footers, or the cover page
  • Shorten the paper to 60 000 characters, including spaces. We calculate the full volume of the paper, including appendices, the cover and contents pages.
  • Save the file in .doc, docx. rtf or .pdf
  • Take into account the recommendations in your nominations. Check the competition website for more information. Some insructions may be in Russian, so ask your buddy for help.
  • Don’t submit papers with plagiarism. They will be discarded from the competition by the Organizing Committee, and their author will lose the opportunity to participate in future competitions.
  • Submit one paper for one nomination, or two different papers in two different nominations. A paper submitted in several nominations simultaneously, or several papers submitted by one author in a single nomination will be declined.
  • Use the Times New Roman font.
  • The paper should consist of three parts:
  1. introduction (key ideas of the topic, reason for selecting the topic and its relevance and a short summary of existing literature on topic)
  2. main part (research of the problem, options for its solution, etc)
  3. conclusion (author’s conclusions)
  • A list of references should be included at the end of the work
  • The names of the authors, academic supervisors and co-authors cannot appear in the text or on the cover page
  • Only research works are accepted for the competition (research papers, design work, creative work, publications, and work being prepared for publication)
  • Works are accepted in Russian and English

Research Paper Competitions at ICPSR

We are now accepting applications for two 2017 competitions (ICPSR Undergraduate and ICPSR Master's), which are listed below.

2017 ICPSR Research Paper Competitions (Undergraduate & Master's categories)

For papers on any topic using data from the ICPSR General Archive or Thematic Collections.

Awards: $1,000 for first place, $750 for second place. There are separate undergraduate and master's prizes for this competition.

  • Entrants must be current master’s or undergraduate students, or recent graduates who graduated on or after April 1, 2015. (Students who graduated before April 1, 2016, are not eligible.)
  • Entrants must be from ICPSR member institutions.
  • Entrants may be from the US or outside the US.
Entry Requirements — ICPSR Competitions

All entries must meet the following criteria:

  • Author Status: Must be an undergraduate or graduate student, or recent graduate (graduated on or after April 1, 2016).
  • Coauthorship: Papers written by more than one student are permitted. Coauthored or multiple-authored winners will share the specified monetary awards.
  • Single Submission: Only one paper entered by author, whether as sole author or as a coauthor.
  • Single Category: Only one competition category may be entered by an author.
  • Student Authorship: Papers coauthored with faculty are not eligible. Only student-authored papers are eligible.
  • Originality: Each paper must be an original analysis and must be the author’s own work. Papers previously published are not eligible.
  • ICPSR Data: Each paper must analyze data held in the ICPSR archive or one of the Thematic Collections. (Students may use a dataset accessed from another source if ICPSR also holds a copy of the same dataset.)
  • Work Product: Papers submitted must be the product of work toward completion of an undergraduate or master’s degree.
  • Preparation: Paper adheres to preparation requirements (see below).
  • Entry Form: Entry form is completed and submitted (see below).
  • Deadline: All papers and corresponding entry forms must be received by midnight Pacific Standard Time, January 31, 2017.
Paper Preparation Requirements

The paper must be written in English and follow these requirements:

Length

Paper should be no longer than 20 pages for undergraduate entries, and no longer than 30 pages for graduate student’s entries. Page limits include all charts/graphs, references, and any appendices.

Appearance and Format
  • Font should be Times New Roman — point size 12
  • Margins of 1 inch (2.5 cm) all around
  • Double spaced
  • Papers must be submitted in MSWord (DOC or DOCX) or Adobe Acrobat (PDF) format.
Charts and Citations
  • Charts and graphs should be “stylized”; that is, exhibits should be developed, formatted, and inserted into the document appropriately. Cutting and pasting direct output from statistical software into the document is not satisfactory.
  • Datasets, publications, and other documentation must be properly cited. See ICPSR's FAQ, Why and how should I cite data? ; see American Psychological Association Bibliographic Style, 6th Edition (PDF 128K) or MLA Bibliographic Style, 7th Edition, 2009 or American Sociological Association (ASA) Style Guide, 4th edition for guides on citing publications. Title Page and Abstract
  • The title page must include the author’s name, faculty advisor’s name, institutional affiliation, expected degree (or recently received degree) and graduation date (month/year), and email address.
  • An abstract of no more than 150 words must follow the title page. Title and abstract pages are not included in page limits.
  • Page headers and/or footers should contain page numbers and a shortened title of the paper. They are not to include the author’s name or the name of his or her institution. This ensures anonymous review by the judges.
Entry Forms

Papers must be submitted electronically along with the proper Entry/Publication Release Form for the entered competition. They must be sent to the correct email address, as indicated in this section. A complete entry includes the research paper and the appropriate Entry and Publication Release Form in the same, single email.

Guidelines for the Student Research Paper Competition

The 20th National Conference on Rural and Intercity Bus is scheduled for October 2012 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Student participation is being encouraged by offering students the opportunity to take part in a research paper competition. Two winning student research papers will be awarded and the authors will receive cash prizes and travel funds to attend the conference.

Research Paper Winners: 1st place $1,000 and 2nd place is $500

Research Paper Competition Rules:

  • Students must attend an accredited college or university.
  • Students participating must be able to provide proof of their college or university registration.
  • Participation in the competition is voluntary.
  • Research papers submitted must be the work of only one student.

  • The research paper entry must indicate:

    Students are encouraged to address topics relating to the conference theme: “Connecting Communities through public transportation.” Preference will be given to papers addressing topics related to planning, policy, operations, special topics areas, and technology.

    Judging Criteria: All essays will be judged on originality, innovation, practicality, timeliness, and readability.

    Approximately 20 percent of the US population lives in rural areas where a shrinking population base and shifting demographics have resulted in a need to travel farther to reach destinations and services such as shopping, healthcare, etc. Individuals living in these rural areas rely on technology and public transportation to maintain connections to regional centers and the global economy. At the same time, an increasing number of seniors choosing to “age in place” in rural areas. Given the emergence of new technology, changes in demographics, shifts in population, and economic and environmental trends, what can public transportation do to better connect communities? What do you think public transportation and intercity bus service will look like in 2050?

    Undergraduate Research Paper Competition

    The Midwest Economics Association invites submission of undergraduate student papers for special undergraduate sessions at its 80th annual meeting, April 1-3, 2016 at the Hilton Orrington, Evanston, Illinois. The competition has been intense in past years, with significantly more papers rejected than accepted. Please bring this solicitation to the attention of faculty in your department so that they can inform undergraduate students of this opportunity to present their research. An award of $200 will be given for the best undergraduate student paper presented at the meetings.

    Undergraduate Paper Submission Guidelines

    Students must submit a 5 page double-spaced pdf-format document containing a research proposal in order to be considered for inclusion in the MEA undergraduate sessions at the Annual Meeting. In this proposal you should do the following:

    1. State your research question.
    2. Review two papers closest to what you are planning to do yourself. This review should be no more than 2 double-spaced pages.
    3. Explain your research plan; that is, how do you plan to replicate or extend the work you have reviewed? What models enable you to understand durable (structural) relations useful for predicting future outcomes? What research methods will enable you to compare the validity of alternative models? For example, will you use econometrics, simulations, or experimental evidence to test the economic model against the real world?
    4. Add information about the research resources or data that you have that will enable you to explore your research question. Indicate whether you already have the data and if so, please describe it in detail.
    5. Indicate what results you expect to have by the April MEA meetings.

    No submissions will be considered without your Name, Email, Mailing Address, College, Cohort (expected graduation year), and your faculty adviser’s name. Submit your 5 page document and $20 submission fee using the abstract submission form located on the MEA website no later than December 1, 2015 *.

    Note: There is a $20 abstract submission fee for undergraduate students to submit a paper. Undergraduates cannot be members of the MEA so they do not pay the membership dues. When students are notified of their paper acceptance, there will be a $45 registration fee to attend the meeting, payable prior to April.

    Political Geography Undergraduate Student Paper Competition

    IGU CPG • Political Geography Undergraduate Student Paper Competition 2013-05-30

    Description: The undergraduate student paper award will go to the best paper on a political geography topic written by an undergraduate student, regardless of membership in the AAG or participation at the Annual Meetings. Papers submitted for awards to other AAG-affiliated organizations are not eligible. This competition is open to all undergraduate students who have written a research paper or senior thesis on a topic in political geography.

    Guidelines are as follows:

    1. The competition is open to all undergraduate students, or those who have completed an undergraduate degree since the last award has been made.

    2. The entries must be research papers or theses, and not reviews. Papers must be longer than 10 double-spaced pages plus bibliography, but less than 15 pages plus bibliography. Margins must be 1” on all sides and 12 point font must be used.

    3. Entries must be on a topic in political geography.

    4. Each university may only submit one undergraduate paper or thesis for consideration.

    5. Electronic copies of papers must be received by all three members of the PGSG’s Undergraduate Student Paper Award Committee Chair by June 15, 2013 to be included in that year’s competition. These submissions should be made by the student’s advisor or the department chair, which will indicate that the submission is the department’s chosen applicant (see #4 above).

    6. Submissions will be judged on their written clarity, methodological and theoretical soundness, and their contributions to research in political geography.

    7. All monetary prizes are awarded at the discretion of the Undergraduate Student Paper Award Committee.

    A. Up to three Honorable Mention awards will be given (award of $50 each).

    B. The winner of the Award will receive $100.

    C. If no acceptable entries are made the committee can decide to not give the award in any given year.

    8. The results of the Student Paper Award competitions will be announced in the fall PGSG newsletter. The awards will be formally announced at the PGSG business meeting and the cash awards and registration reimbursement will be distributed to the awardees at that time. The awardees’ names and paper titles will be forwarded to the AAG for publication in the AAG Newsletter.

    9. Any questions pertaining to eligibility will be resolved by the Undergraduate Student Paper Award Committee.

    Instructions:
    The Poster Competition provides students an opportunity to showcase their research for all conference attendees. The Poster Session is open for any undergraduate student to present results from projects that they have carried out as undergraduate researchers at their university or during internships/co-ops. The Poster Session covers all key areas of chemical engineering, including sustainability, catalysis and reaction engineering, computing and process control, environmental aspects of chemical engineering, food, pharmaceutical, bioengineering, fuels, petrochemicals, energy, materials, and separations.

    1. This poster session is exclusively for undergraduate student members of an AIChE Mid-Atlantic Student Chapter.
    2. Posters should fit a space 3’x4’ and should be landscape.
    3. Each poster will be judged by a panel of 3 or 4 judges from academia and industry. The decision of these judges will be final.
    4. You must be present at your poster for the duration of the competition (10:00am – 12:00pm) in order to qualify for the Poster Competition.
    5. Ensure your adviser/supervisor/co-authors sign off on your abstract before submission. All submitted abstracts become public information after submission.
    6. Upon submission of your abstract, you will be asked to pick a topic from a list of 10 available research areas. More information is listed below.

    Topical Areas:
    If you have any question about which topical area is best for your poster, please consult with your advisor/supervisor/co-authors. For topic selection, focus on the nature of the work that was done, not on pie-in-the-sky applications. For example, fundamental research into new polymeric materials should be submitted to the “Materials” topical area, even if the ultimate applications may be for novel drink bottles, which may suggest “Food”. Only if no topical area seems particularly appropriate for capturing a substantial portion of your work, you may submit it to the “General” topic area as last resort.

    Paper Competition Prizes:

    The subject of each paper is left entirely to the individual student. Presentations often focus on recent advances in some branch of chemical engineering, original research, or plant design. Participation in the Regional Undergraduate Research Paper Competition offers valuable, real-world experience for students.

    1. Each entry must be an undergraduate student and a member of one of the participating student AIChE chapters.
    2. Each school may submit up to 3 (three) papers. The first paper submitted will be unconditionally accepted; the second and third papers will be conditionally accepted pending host school resources. Final acceptance status will be announced 3 weeks prior to the event.
    3. Only the first three papers submitted per school will be considered; subsequent school submissions will not be accepted.
    4. Co-authorship of papers is permitted. However, only one person shall make the presentation at the competition, and this person must have been substantially involved in the project or subject of the presented paper.
    5. Ensure your advisor/supervisor/co-authors sign off on your abstract before submission. All submitted abstracts become public information after submission.
    6. A panel of three-four chemical engineers (faculty, industry representative, or AIChE local section member) will judge paper presentations. The decision of these judges will be final.

    We hope you and your team will join us in an evening of great fun during the ChemE Jeopardy competition at the University of Maryland’s mid-Atlantic AIChE student regional conference this spring! Below, you will find the rules and guidelines governing the competition.

    General Rules and Considerations:

    • Three teams per game
    • Four students per team
    • Points are deducted for incorrect responses
    • All responses must be given in the form of a question
    • Participants are not allowed to buzz-in until the question has been entirely read aloud

    The competition will consist of two rounds: the preliminary round and the championship round. The winner from each game during the preliminary round will advance to the championship round. The winner of the championship round will automatically qualify for the national competition held at the Annual Student Conference. The structure of both rounds is similar, except that the championship round consists of double Jeopardy, whereas the preliminary round does not. Here’s what you need to know about the structure of the games.

    • Six categories for both single and double Jeopardy
    • Five clues for every category
    • Approximately half of the categories will be related to chemical engineering
    • Other possible topics for categories include biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, and other engineering disciplines
    • One of six categories will be related to topics outside of science and engineering (such as geography, history, politics, pop culture, etc.)
    • The difficulty of the clue increases with point value
    • Teams are allowed to discuss responses prior to buzzing in, but all conversation must stop when a team buzzes-in
    • The team member that buzzes-in must be the same person that gives the response
    • 5 seconds to respond after buzzing-in
    • 5 seconds to buzz-in after an incorrect response
    • 10 seconds to provide a response to the Daily Double

    Single and Double Jeopardy

    • Clues range from 100 to 500 points (multiples of 100) in single Jeopardy
    • Clues range from 200 to 1000 points (multiples of 200) in double Jeopardy
    • If a team gives a correct response, they are able to pick the next clue
    • The team with the lowest score entering double Jeopardy picks the first clue
    • Single Jeopardy and double Jeopardy each contain two Daily Double questions
    • Daily Double wager may be as high as the team’s total points at the time or 500 (single Jeopardy)/1000 (double Jeopardy) points, whichever is greater
    • Teams with negative scores will not be allowed to particulate in final Jeopardy
    • Final Jeopardy questions will always be related to chemical engineering
    • Teams have 30 seconds to write down their wager (any value between 0 and current team score)
    • Teams have 30 seconds to write down their response, in the form of a question, to the final Jeopardy clue
    • In the case of a tie after final Jeopardy has been completed, a sudden-death tie breaker will be conducted. A single category and clue will be presented to the teams; the first team to buzz-in and give the correct response wins the game.
