It's a hot summer day, and you've spent the morning mowing the lawn. Needless to say, you're ready to cool off and eager for some fun. Nothing fills that order like a swim, but will you head for the neighborhood swimming pool or someplace in the great outdoors, such as a lake? These two settings differ in many ways.

First of all, swimming pools contrast with natural bodies of water because pools have been created with one purpose in mind: to make swimming, sunning, splashing, and diving just as fun and safe as possible. You won't bump into slimy fish or water weeds at a pool — nothing gets in the way of exercise and relaxation. You'll find slides, a diving board, wading pools for little kids, lounge chairs, and maybe even a toasty whirlpool. Also, the water is treated with chemicals to keep the pool clean and safe, and nonslip surfaces alongside keep wet feet steady. You won't find these features at the seashore. For maximum convenience, some pools are built indoors, so you can swim even if a thunderstorm is going on outside.

A swim in a freshwater pond or the salty sea is a whole different experience. Humans did not create these places, and each is unique (most swimming pools, by contrast, look as if they rolled off the same assembly line). You can feast your eyes on nature at a sandy beach with crashing waves or at a rock-edged lake. As you wade into the water, you'll feel grainy sand or squishy mud on your toes, not the artificially smooth floor of a pool. In addition, water temperature is not controlled; it may be warm or icy. Oceans and ponds also differ from swimming pools in the variety of activities they offer. Once you've beat the heat with a dip, you can try boating, surfing, or fishing — don't try those at the town pool! On the other hand, weather can dampen the fun. A stormy or cold day can make it impossible to swim outdoors.

Yet with all their differences, these two settings are alike in many ways, and swimmers find both attractive. For example, activities such as swimming lessons and junior lifesaving classes are available at city pools as well as rural lakes. In both places you can get a real workout in the water or just take it easy. Go ahead, work seriously on your backstroke or just playfully dog-paddle. The main goal of a summer swim is easily met at an Olympic-size pool or a local swimming hole, despite their differences. They both provide a great way to cool off and enjoy the company of friends and family.

Most important, at both swimming pools and beaches, swimmers have responsibilities. They should show courtesy and common sense. At these places signs are posted to explain rules for safety and polite behavior, and they should be heeded! Lifeguards or other adults need to be present wherever people enjoy the water. Guidelines like these are a feature of all swimming places.

As you can see, swimming pools can provide a wonderful recreational experience for swimmers, and so can lakes, streams, and oceans. These settings differ in some features, yet they resemble each other in some ways. Take it from someone who loves to swim — it's hip to dip in both places!

What is a Comparison / Contrast Essay?

A comparison shows how two subjects are similar; a contrast shows how two subjects are different. People compare and contrast in both writing and life. In writing, you must first decide whether you will compare, contrast or both. Follow these steps when writing a comparison / contrast essay.

1. Identify similarities and differences.

If you have three items to compare or contrast, figure out how they are similar and how they are different.

  • You will need to find at least three points for comparison / contrast.
  • Write detailed characteristics for each point.

Let�s say you want to compare three seasons.

hot, sunny, tornadoes

very cold, windy, snow, flurries

cool, frost, sleet

green, blue, yellow

grey, orange, red, purple, brown

swimming, sailing, beach, baseball

skiing, ice skating, bowling

2. State your purpose in the thesis sentence.

Identify the three subjects that you will compare and state whether you will focus on similarities, differences, or both. The thesis may also indicate which points you will compare / contrast.

3. Choose a pattern to organize your essay.

The two major patterns for organizing a comparison/contrast essay are:

Subject by Subject (Whole-to-whole). Your write first about one of your subjects, covering it completely, and then you write about the other, covering it completely. Each subject is addressed in a separate paragraph. The points of comparison or contrast will be the same for each subject and will be presented in the same order.

The following is an example of subject by subject organization:

Point by Point. Each point is addressed in a separate paragraph. You discuss both of your subjects together for each point of comparison and contrast. Maintain consistency by discussing the same subject first for each point.

4. Use appropriate transitions.

Transitions are important in comparison/contrast writing, especially with the point by point organization, to avoid confusion. Without transitions, the points you are comparing/contrasting may blur into one another. Also, a variety of transitions prevent monotony.

To evaluate the effectiveness of a comparison/contrast essay, ask the following: Is the essay balanced? The most common error in a comparison / contrast essay is spending too much time on one subject and too little on the other. Make sure the essay equally and thoroughly covers both subjects.

Ray Bradbury: Short Stories Summary and Analysis of "All Summer in a Day"

In "All Summer in a Day," a group of schoolchildren live on the planet Venus with their families. They are nine years old, and they are eagerly awaiting a momentous occasion. After 5 years of continuous rain, the scientists on Venus have predicted that the sun will come out today for a brief period of time. The children have only seen the sun once in their lives, but they were two years old and they don't remember how it looks or feels. To prepare for the day, they have constantly read about the sun and completed classroom activities, such as writing a poem, about the sun.

This is true for all but one of the children. Margot. a thin, pale girl that the rest of the children resent for various reasons, lived in Ohio until she was five. She still has many memories of the sun, and the sun continues to fascinate her. Marot refuses to participate in any classroom activity that doesn't include the sun. In fact, she has been in a depressed state for most of her time on Venus. Rumors have it that her parents are strongly considering taking her away from the underground colony on Venus and back to her home on Earth.

Margot looks out of the window, waiting silently for the rain to stop and the sun to come out. The other children become upset with her and begin to push and taunt her. One of the boys jokes with her, "It was all a joke, wasn't it? Nothing's happening today" (3.) Suddenly, the children seize Margot and conceive of the idea to hide Margot in a closet while their teacher is gone. Margot resists but they overpower her and lock her in a faraway closet.

The teacher returns and they all go to the tunnel's exit, as she thinks everyone is present and accounted for from her class. Then, moments later, the rain stops and the sun appears. All of the children exit the tunnels and begin to run around and enjoy the sun. It is unlike anything they could imagine. They exult, "It's better than the sun lamps, isn't it?" as they run around the jungles of Venus.

After lying out, playing, and enjoying the weather, one of the girls cries out because she is cradling a big, fat raindrop in her hand. Everyone stopped. They stood for a moment, thinking about how wonderful the sun felt on their skins. While they do this, the rain clouds move in. The sun retreats; the rain falls harder. All of the children stop for a moment before re-entering the tunnels, reflecting on how wonderful the past hour was.

As they re-entered the hallway, they asked their teacher questions. "Will it really be seven more years?" (5.) Once again, another student gave a muffled cry. She remembered that Margot was still in the closet. She had been there for the entire time that they were outside enjoying the sun-soaked weather. They slowly walked towards the closet where they had left Margot, and they were all nervous to approach it. They slowly walked to the closet door, and no noises were emitted from behind the closet door. They unlocked the door and Margot slowly emerged.

Bradbury uses a variety of metaphors to depict an image of life on Venus, an idea that is foreign to us yet familiar through Bradbury's language. Not only does his language bring us a clear image of Venus, but it also creates the tangible feeling of discovering the pleasures of the sun. Venus "was the color of rubber and ash, this jungle, from the many years without sun. It was the color of stones and white cheeses and ink, and it was the color of the moon" (4.) The reader is instantly able to picture Bradbury's Venus landscape with his illustrative language.

The power of the sun over the children living on Venus is notable. They are pale and colorless, not just physically but also emotionally. The lack of the sun has not only washed away the color on their skin but also their compassion and empathy for other people. They do not gain this until they've spent time under the sun's rays. The sun is life giving for the landscape as well as the inhabitants of Venus.

Margot's initial exclusion from the group may speak to the difficulties of integrating immigrants into a community. Margot struggles to fit in everyday of her time on Venus, and she does not get along with the other children. They resent her for her past experiences on Earth with the sun, and they are also angry and jealous that she has the opportunity to travel back to Earth regardless of the financial costs. Though abstract, Margot represents one version of an immigrant story.

At the conclusion of the story, the children who were once hypercritical of Margot begin to arrive at an understanding of what she has been feeling since arriving in Venus. They did not understand her depression or refusal to participate in certain activities, primarily because they did not understand how Margot was so enraptured by the sun. It is not until they spend time outside, basking in the sunlight, that they begin to comprehend how much Margot sacrificed when she moved from Ohio to Venus.

This development in the story highlights a broader theme of ignorance and its presence and absence throughout the story. When the children only knew "sun lamps" and could not remember the last time the sun had shone, the daily monotony of rain was not a major concern in their lives. They were ignorant to the possible benefits of the sun. Now that they have experienced the sun and their ignorance has lifted, it will be a difficult shift back to the constant rain. As the rain begins to fall once again, they are disheartened when they ask their teacher, "Will it be seven more years?" (6.) They finally comprehend the gravity of their teacher's answer.

Summer vacation is still a fun time for everyone. and probably still ranks equivalently with Christmas break now with children as it did when I was a child. It ranks a bit higher on my list now because Christmas actually costs me more money and I get relatively few gifts that I can brag about. However. those three long months of freedom have now literally become more like three short weeks of nonstop catch up time Once you 're all grown up. you can 't take three months off of work. but when I do get that limited and precious treasured time off with great weather. it goes all too fast. My summer break ' is so busy that I sometimes long for the structured. restricted work day. As an adult. I often crave the freedom of a non structured day. where I can sit around in my pajamas or lounging pants all day if I wish. where I am in control of my day and what I do and when I do it. But there is always so much to do that I stay extremely busy and there doesn 't seem to be enough hours in one day to do everything that.
