Blade Runner Analytical Essay Essay, Research Paper

Although blade runner seems to be a film about technology it is really about the nature of being human.

Blade Runner written by Ridley Scott is a movie based in the future. It is Scott’s depiction of what is to become of Earth. But technological advances shown in Blade Runner have come to a point where humanity can be questioned. Reality is blurred and the nature of what is human is changing. Replicants appear identical to humans and even have emotions, while the real humans appear cold and unemotional. So who is really human and what does it mean to be humane?

Technology is a key part of the movie and its advances are shown through out the movie. Deckard lives in a world with man made animals, flying cars, off world colonies and more importantly manufactured humans called replicants. The fact that the replicants are equal to humans physically and even mentally is troubling and brings forward major questions. But with all these advancements Los Angeles is portrayed by Scott as a dark and gloomy wasteland of mostly empty high rise buildings and full of dark alleys and dirty streets. It is not a nice looking place and is without trees and animals, left is only the formidable skyscrapers and manufactured animals. It seems to have consumed everything as no attempt is made to show elsewhere. With the off world colonies to go to, Earth has been abandoned and all that?s left is a polluted wasteland for the rejects and lowlifes.

The humans inhabiting Earth are shown to be cold, brutal and lacking any compassion. There are the cops like Bryant and Gaff who appear gloomy and unemotional just doing there jobs and having little regard for the replicants or “skin jobs” as Bryant called them. Asians are shown frequently the movie and make up the bulk of people on the street. This makes the city look like a big China town with the Asians selling anything from take away food to manufactured animals. These people must not be important enough to go to the off world colonies or don’t want to go. The rest of people shown are street scums, cripples, midgets and sick people like J.R Sebastion who has a life shortening disease. Lastly there is Tyrell who is the powerful god like figure who seems to rule and dominate the city with the towering buildings.

The replicants in Blade Runners are almost identical to humans, as they physically look exactly identical to normal people. They even make there own decisions, have emotions and Roy even shows compassion at the end. Bauldy, Zhora and Pris just want to survive and do not have or show developed emotions. Rachael differs to them as we see her find out she is a replicant. She is nieve was unaware of what she was. But Rachael shows emotions and reveals her personal side later on. Roy Batty is the leader of the rouge replicants and is shown as a prodigal son returning to his maker. He is the Nexus 6 model replicant and shows superior strength and intelligence and returns to Tyrell hi maker. Roy is a designed as a killing machine but he shows more than that. At the end he shows compassion and pity for Deckard and saves him, then dies with dignity.

The technology of Earth has come to a point where the replicants which, are not born but manufactured by humans are so real that they are almost undetectable. They show all the signs of being human and especially Rachael and Roy appear to be humane. With the real humans being so cold and unemotional puts forward the question of what makes someone human or humane. In the dark and gloomy world the replicants are vulnerable and struggling for life. Does a machine do this? Does it come to the point where we need to give the replicants rights that we demand? That is the result of such technological advances that we may take our selves and then Ridley Scott’s book may not be fiction.

The scene I chose is from 1:08:00 to 1:12:38. It is mainly about Rachel playing piano while Deckard is sleeping. Deckard wakes up and tries to kiss her. Rachel refuses and tries to leave, but at the end of the scene, she faces her real emotions and kisses Deckard.

It starts with a medium over-the-shoulder shot of Rachel. The room is dark but the area around her is quite bright because there is a lamp on the piano plus light is coming in from the advertising spaceship outside. Rachel wears the clothes and hairstyle of a 1940's American woman, as she always does. The shot of her back clear shows her curves and her dress with its 1940s design of wide-shoulders.

Then comes a close up of Rachel's hand, she is picking an old photo from the piano. When she sits down, the background is blurred, after which the camera focuses on another picture on the piano. It is a photo of a woman with fluffy hair. We can see a medium shot of Rachel and the pianos as she is looking at the picture. She casts her eyes into the air as if she is memorizing it. This reminds the viewer that it is a hard time for her since she has just been told that all her own memories never existed. She has made by Tyrell and since her past is not truly hers, she is not the real her. Rachel looks down at the photo and puts it back to the piano. The camera focuses again on the photo of the fluffy haired woman. The repetition of the shot of this photo is actually foreshadowing that Rachel is imitating this woman when she lets down her hair afterwards. The camera now changes to Deckard, who is sleeping in shadow. This close-up tells us the condition of Deckard, which is exhausted. When the camera moves back to Rachel, she is taking off her coat, her face has no emotion; it's pale yet sophisticated. She looks at the score then she slowly starts to play.

Introduction
In the science of studying media and communication, there are many different ways of approaching the subject in which you are going to analyse. That is to analyse advertisements, texts, TV-series, films etc. and other media. My task for this assignment is to give an analysis of a film of my choice. A film is a quite complex medium to analyse; thus it is important to have analysis "tools" or some criteria to follow. In my analysis I am asked to consider the use and resolution of binary opposition and through analysis of narrative structure. In my assignment I am going to consider how the couple is represented, and how the narrative structure and binary oppositions have influence on the plot of the story.

The film I have chosen is the old science fiction film noir "Blade Runner". During this analysis, I will use the abbreviation BR when referring to Blade Runner. I have chosen the original version, and not the "Director’s cut"- version that were released in 1992. Furthermore, this is a complex movie that I thought would be interesting to use for an analysis. It is a dark, futuristic science fiction movie, which is said to be "a hybrid of science fiction, film noir, detective thriller, bounty-hunter western and love story" (Gianetti, L. 1999, p. 313). Thus it is a quite complex film, and there are lots of things to consider.
Moreover, the complexity is due to the fact that there are more than one possible plot in the movie. In my opinion the most important plot is that androids or replicants vs humans. Deckard’s dramatic need in BR is to haunt and kill four "nexus 6" replicants that is considered a great danger to humans. Another plot is the romance between Deckard (human) and Rachel (android or replicant). This is more of a sub-plot. Further, there is the question if Deckard himself is a replicant. Film analysts and Blade Runner fanatics frequently ask that question. Deckard’s glowing eyes and his fascination for.
