    The Essay: Theory and Pedagogy for an Active Form.

    Calling for a radical reexamination of the traditional foundation of composition instruction--the thesis/support form, this book argues that the essay, with its informality, conversational tone, meditative mood, and integration of form and content, is better suited to developmental, epistemological, ideological, and feminist rhetorical pespectives. The book first traces the origins of the essay in the 16th century. It then examines 20th-century theories of the form to illustrate what constitutes the fundamental qualities of the essay--epistemological skepticism, anti-scholasticism, and the use of an "anti-Ciceronian chrono-logic" organization ("we can only have one thought in our heads at a time, one thought leads to another, and time flows in only one direction"). This leads to writing that is well developed and well ordered, consistent, and methodical. The book shapes a "rehabilitative theory" of the essay by applying the theories of Mikhail Bakhtin to advance a conception of the essay as a centrifugal, novelistic, dialogic, and carnivalesque form. The book then examines the practice of some contemporary essayists--Aldous Huxley, Joan Didion, Charles Simic, Alice Walker, Scott Russell Sanders, Gretel Ehrlich, and Joseph Epstein. Extensive, detailed accounts of assignments and classroom activities on the essay form that have been used effectively with students are offered. Several student essays are presented in their entirety and analyzed in the book. An afterword and appendixes on sources and works cited conclude the book. (NKA)

    Formatting Formatting checklist Below is a list of general do's and don'ts to consider when word-processing your work. Do remember, though, that different tutors/lecturers may expect different things from you, so check with them.
    • Leave enough space between lines and in the margins for your tutor to write comments.
    • Use Bold or Italic for occasional emphasis, but don't overuse them.
    • Use Italics for titles of books or articles if you mention them in the main text (use the shortcut key Ctrl and i ). In language and linguistics essays, use Italics for examples of language (not for emphasis)
    • Don't use CAPITALS for emphasis.
    • Don't use Underlining .
    • Don't use the Enter (return) key to start new lines. Let Microsoft Word do this automatically. Use the Enter key only at the end of paragraphs or when you want to start a new kind of text format, such as a block quote.
    • Don't leave a space before punctuation marks, but do leave 1 space after punctuation. Some people leave 2 spaces after a full stop, but never after other punctuation marks. Be consistent in the number of spaces you leave
    • Use reader-friendly fonts for the main text such as Garamond or Times New Roman.
    • For the main text, use 12 or 10 point font size. Headings can be 12 or 14. Don't make headings bigger than they need to be.
    • Use your judgement about design. Try to format your essay so it is as readable as possible, by reducing 'visual noise'.
    • If in doubt, ask your teacher how you should format your text
    • save your work regularly (find out how to set your program to do this automatically and set it to save every 10 minutes)
    • Use the tab key to indent quotes of more than two sentences.
    • Learn how to use shortcut keys (e.g. Ctrl and X = cut; Ctrl and C = copy; Ctrl and V = paste)
    • Rename each successive draft you work on using the Edit - Save As function so you can compare them; for example, Drftess1.doc; Drftess2.doc; Drftess3.doc. These are only examples, in real life you will want to keep the file name as descriptive as possible, so if you're writing your first Literature essay, something like, Litdrft1.doc would be better.
