The plot of the play is that Bassanio wants to borrow money so he goes with Antonio to Shylock who is a wealthy Jewish business man, even though they call him a dog and mock his Jewish ways Shylock offers him a bond, Shylock says that if he doesn´t pay he will take a pound of Antonio´s flesh, he says this and Antonio and Bassanio believe he is only joking, Even though Antonio is racist towards him he still lends him the money. The play is a mixture of love greed and revenge. I would define a “victim” as someone who is on the receiving end of abuse; this could be physical or verbal. The victim may or may not contribute to there victimisation for example someone could be victimised for their physical appearance which they have no control over and have not contributed to, or someone could be victimised because of their actions which they have control over and have contributed to. In Shakespeare´s time it would have been classed as the norm to be racist towards the Jews and the people watching the Merchant of Venice would have cheered when shylock was treated badly for example in act 3 scene 1 Solanio says “lest the devil cross my prayer, for here he comes now in the likeness of a Jew” this is aimed at shylock and they are calling him the devil, the crowd would most probably laughed at this in Shakespeare´s time and would have found it very amusing, they will not have seen shylock as a victim but as a villain who hated all Christians. Christians would use excuses like the Jews killed Jesus as a reason to hate them but really most Christians hate Jews because they where envious of them because they where usually very religious and where allowed to practice usury in their religion whereas Christians where not and therefore Christians usually owed them money, also the Jewish are usually very well educated this is a few reasons why Christians sometimes hated them.

Nowadays we would see this play as very racist towards the Jewish people because times have changed and people think differently, people are more aware of people as individuals and not just as a member of a group even though racism still exists today. There is a long history of the persecution of the Jews for example the holocaust where Hitler carried out ethnic cleansing against the Jews and many other religions and groups of people, he killed some 6 million Jews just because they where different. Another example is what happened in Britain 700 years ago where the Jews where killed and expelled from Britain.

We only know a bit about shylocks past history, but we do know that there was a woman in his life, this could have been his wife as it seems he was very close to her but she died, we know this because his most prized possession was a ring that he gave to her in Frankfurt but this was stolen by his daughter and traded for a monkey.

He is Jewish so all his life he would have suffered racial abuse so this could have made him very vengeful towards Antonio as he is a Christian, when Shylock finds out that Antonio is going bankrupt and he says “I thank God I thank God” and he decides

to kick him when he is down and take revenge for all the times Antonio has wronged him, Shylock says “ He hath disgraced me and hindered me half a million” meaning Antonio has gone out of his way so that Shylock lost half a million ducats. Shylock is showing a very nasty side to himself in this scene and he is on a roller coaster of emotions, first he is unhappy about his daughter then he finds out about Antonio and he cheers up.

We don´t really know much about Antonio´s past history but we do know he is a wealthy merchant in the city of Venice. Antonio is portrayed by Shakespeare as an outcast and does not get involved in the social atmosphere that is thriving in Venice.

We think he has never been married or has ever wanted to, in act 1 scene 1 when solanio says “Why then you are in love” Antonio replies with “Fie, Fie” meaning nonsense.

Shylock must not have had a very good relationship with his daughter for her to run off with all his money. It is understandable for his daughter to run away from shylock because she is in love with a Christian, but for her to run away with all his money shylock must not have had a very good relationship with her, she swapped his most cherished possession, a ring that Shylock gave to Jessica´s mother in Frankfurt for a monkey. This is very nasty and deliberate and just shows she wanted to hurt Shylock. From reading the text we can see that shylock was keeping Jessica as a prisoner in her own house, by not letting her out and not letting her hear the Christian music around her he says to her “Lock up my doors; and when you hear the drum. But stop my house’s ears-I mean casements. Let not the sound of shallow fopp’ry enter my sober house.” Jessica hates the way Shylock treats her and calls Shylock Satan. Shylock does not love his daughter enough and he even complains when he has to pay someone to find her so he can get his money back.

Antonio does not seem to have much family but he treats Bassanio like he is part of his family as far as we see in the play he is the closest thing to a family for Antonio and Antonio seems like a very lonely businessman.

Shylock does not seem to have any friends as he treats everyone as if he was superior to them, he has pushed all his friends away by treating them bad and even his daughter has left him, he treated Launcelot bad by talking behind his back about his laziness “The patch is kind enough, but a huge feeder, Snail-slow in profit, and he sleeps by day More than the wildcat

Drones hive not with me. His borrowed purse.”

Antonio seems bitter and finds it difficult expressing his emotions at first, but he seems to like Bassanio very much, and he even lets him use his name to get credit even when he owes Antonio money. Antonio seems to like Bassanio differently to his other friends and he seems to love him and want to see no harm done to him. Antonio has lots of friends as you can see at the beginning of the play when they are all concerned about him and this gives the impression that he must be likeable for him to have friends but his friends could just be pretending to like him for his money and this

could be why he feels he can´t confide in them and tell them what is upsetting him so much.

Shylock is a very powerful businessman and he feels himself superior to anyone else especially Christians, he is a very greedy man using the bible as a source of interest to collect more money, Antonio says “Mark you this, Bassanio, The devil can cite scripture for his purpose. An evil sole, producing holy witness, is like a villain with a smiling cheek, a goodly apple rotten at the heart.” Shylock likes to think he is a very powerful man and he is obsessed with power and money.

Antonio seems to be a very powerful merchant but is not as greedy as Shylock Antonio is generous and is willing to pay back Thrice the loan to Shylock. Antonio is a kind and generous man but he agrees to the pound of flesh deal being very naive that his ships will return safely. Antonio is very powerful in the community as he can easily get credit when he wants it even though he does not like to use it he says “Shylock, albeit I neither lend nor borrow” and then he says “Yet, to supply the ripe wants of my friend, ill break a custom.” here Antonio is showing that he is a very generous and kind man and although at first he may have seemed hard I think that he is a very good man and cares very much about other people especially Bassanio. Antonio also suggest that men may look perfect, but deep inside, they acquire negative characteristics.

I think that Shylocks religion does not affect his behaviour very much at all I think he just uses it to make money and he hides behind it, although he thinks his religion is the superior one and that anyone who thinks different is inferior to him. Although he is subject to racial abuse because of his beliefs this could affect him and therefore showing that his religion has affected his behaviour because he will think differently about other religions and stereotype them saying that they all hate him because he is Jewish.

I think that religion has affected Antonio and he also feels that his religion is superior to others he says “The Hebrew will turn Christian; he grows kind.” I think he says this because he thinks that no Jews are kind and that he thinks that because Shylock Is being kind then he must be turning into a Christian, this is evidence that Antonio thinks that Christianity is superior to any other religion.

Because Shylock is a Jew he is treated very bad he is kicked and called a dog and many times he is referred to as the devil, although Shylock seems to just let this go over his head he would not like this because he is a very religious person and he would not like to be referred to as the Devil. Because of the way Shylock is treated all through his life he has become very vengeful and he is very stereotypical towards Antonio and other Christians he blames all of them for his race´s problems even though it may not be all Christians that are racist towards the Jews and he says Christians have persecuted his race when he says “To bait fish withal. If it will feed nothing else, it will feed my revenge…The villainy you teach me I will execute, and it shall go hard but I will better the instruction.”

Shylock gets worse and he takes Antonio to court over his bond, this is showing that Shylock is the true villain of the play even though he is subjected to racism all his life these actions show that Shylock really is the villain in the play.

Shylock mistreats Antonio because he is Christian, Shylock does not even know Antonio but as soon as he sees him he assumes that he is bad just because he is a Christian, Shylock says, “How like a fawning publican he looks! I hate him because he is Christian” Shylock is stereotyping Antonio just because he is Christian and even though Shylock thinks he is the one who is on the receiving end of racism he is also giving it out.

I think religion has affected the way people treat Antonio because he is hated by shylock simply because he is a Christian, Shylock does not even give Antonio a chance and judges him on the little bit about him that he knows, I think he has a lot of Christian friends and that they certainly would not be friends with him if he was not a Christian. I think both Shylock and Antonio are treated like they are inferior simple because they are a member of one religion, this still goes on today and people are fighting just because there beliefs are different.

I feel that Shylock is most definitely the villain of “The Merchant of Venice” he goes to far when he takes Antonio to court he mistreats to many people and the asks for mercy in court, although sometimes he may have been ganged up on by Christians in court and throughout the play he should not have gone so far, he could have just walked away with a lot more money but instead he tries to use Antonio as a scapegoat for his revenge, he should not have done this and even though he has been subjected to anti-Semitism all his life it is no excuse for attempting to take another mans life.

My Experience That Changed Me

I went to camp for the first time last summer to get away from the pressures of home and school. Camp was a month long, I have never been away from my parents more than a week. I was very anxious. I had no idea what situations to expect and how I would handle them.

I started to really wonder about my life. The way it was going was not the best for me. I can ?run away? from my reality, but I know that I was going to have to come back to it in a month. The way I treat people was total opposite from how I treated my parents. What my friends were capable of doing was not a bit close to what my parents would let me do, my parents are very narrow minded. My grandparents were even more severe, my culture is different from my friends and it?s hard for me to understand and accept it. What my parents expect from me is much higher then what other parents require from kids my age. I have more responsibilities at home and of course I have school responsibilities to go along with it as well. Since my parents didn?t let me do the things I insisted to do, I became quite rebellious. I would answer back to them, not pay attention and not do the things they wanted me to. I needed a new ways of handling things at home, I thought nobody or anything can help me. I couldn?t wait to leave.

After one week, camp was not great anymore, all of my bunk mates felt the same way. Everything little thing anyone would do, got to be so aggravating. We really started having problems from the first day of camp. A girl in my bunk named Jenna did not get to be in the bunk she wanted to be in. She decided to handle the situation by giving everyone a hard time as well as a bad attitude. The way she talked to the counselor, reminded me how I treated my parents. My counselor Jody never did anything to Jenna. The first day of camp she told the counselor ?If you don?t change me from this bunk I’ll hate you?

Jody just said ?For saying that to me I won?t change you from the bunk you want?

It doesn?t matter what you say to me because no matter what I will get what I want. You don?t know what I can do. said Jenna back to her. She ran to her friend?s bunk, Jody didn?t want to make it a big complication out of it so she didn?t worry about it. She never got her bunk changed, but it didn?t matter because she would always sleep over her friends? bunk. I wanted to relax this summer and was not going to let someone give me a hard time, so we never talked much.

Two weeks were nearly over and our parents were going to come visit us in a day or two. I started to be nice to Jenna and she was nice to me, but I sensed that she didn?t want to be friends. She had a problem with my friend Lauren. At this time we were all ready to kill each other. I remember an argument that Jenna had with Lauren, they were yelling at each other and it only got worse by the second. I came up to them and started to hear what they were saying, since I was on lauren?s side, I yelled at Jenna ?What is wrong with you.

You can?t yell at me like that, you don?t know who I am. said Jenna

Then I said ?I don?t care who you are?

I can make your life miserable” she said. At this point I was thinking to myself that this girl has major problems thinking she can do and say whatever she wants. I started to feel sorry for her.

I wanna see you try? I then said, slamming the door. Even though we weren?t on everyone good?s side I still cared for her. They were fighting because Lauren told Jenna she was wrong and that she was spreading a rumor. Jenna is one of those people who think everything they do and say is right no matter what. I talked to Jenna later that day and told her I know it was not any of my business but I had to make it mine because she was doing was wrong. This fight was between lauren and Jenna. Jenna was bringing all her friends against lauren, making her feel bad, which is not right. Lauren was about to end the fight, which would have been the right thing to do. She never had anything against me until I spoke to her with an attitude. No one ever does that? she said.

No one ever talks to me like that either. Then I decided to be the mature one and say I?m sorry. She accepted it and said sorry as well.

I talked to Lauren and told her I had a talk with Jenna. I told her everything we both said. She told me that I was just as immature as Jenna when I said the same thing back to her. I was confused I didn?t get her at first and was offended. I then left the room and wanted to be alone. I started thinking and I realized I was like her. The way she acted and presented her self was the way I was at times. I was very upset, I have to change. Changing was not an easy process that happens from one day to the next. I came to camp with some friends from school, Lauren and Jessie were the ones who helped me realize all these things about myself. I was wondering how my parents must feel when we fight and what they are going through. No one?s life is or near to perfect. I was not the only one with these problems. Their are kids with even worse problems then me and I was glad I am not alone.

Before going to camp fighting with my parents was be something I did regularly. I didn?t like to fight with them. I never thought it was my fault, so I never apologized. Their ways of thinking are very different from mine. Now I?ll listen to them and understand that maybe I could be wrong. I am old enough to make my own decisions and handle my own consequences.

I went through a big change over the summer. My experience at camp helped me realize I have to see things from the perspective of others. Nobody?s life is easy. Dealing with different types of people at camp was not easy. I also learned that their is no reason to get angry over something so little. I?d rather use up my energy for something productive. Camp helped me become a better person.

“Life Long Learning”
As we progress through life we learn many valuable lessons, many of these lessons tend to have a profound outcome on the type of person who we eventually mature into. The purpose of this paper is to explain some of the valuable experiences which have prepared me for various times in my life. My experiences in life whether good or bad have directly influenced my willingness to trust people in general. When I first meet a person, I let them go through a temporary friendship phase. Usually, it’s just until I’m sure that I want to accept this person as a true friend and the feeling is mutual.
Respect is a very important value for everyone to have. At a very young age my parents ensured that showed respect for them. Anyone that was considered to be an adult should receive some type of respect from a child. Giving adults the proper respect helped me realize that if you treat everyone with kindness and respect you would receive the same in return. I think everyone deserves some form of respect. Growing up in the inner city it seemed as if most neighborhood fights took place because one person disrespected the other.
In the military a member can be put on report, arrested and put in jail for disrespecting a higher ranking officer. For a more serious incident such as disrespecting the President of the United States or the U.S. flag the punishment consists of losing present rank, constant scrutiny and federal jail time. I think the values of respect instilled in me from my parents were a good foundation, for all the things I would experience in the military. Time management or using ones time wisely was a learning skill that I gained from my parents as well as the military. As a young boy my mother constantly said, “Don’t waste your time”, but I didn’t really know what she meant by it though. We all wish that we could have more time here on Earth. With more time we could accomplish more things and spend m.

Its considered that childhood memory is special for everybody because its very personal. I cant imagine my childhood without reminding the time that Ive spent at our summer cottage. I can even say that its the most precious time in my life. Its situated in half an hour from city by the most beautiful sea that Ive ever seen in my life. Unfortunately we sold it 6 years ago, and maybe that is why I appreciate it so much, people always desires what theyve lost and arent able to get back for going through it again.
I still clearly remember us, me, my aunt and my granny, going there every summer for a holiday. And with every new word that I write into this essay I remind new shots from that what weve got through there together.
We used to spend there 3 months of summer. We went there to spend my birthday and stayed till the study year begins. My mother came to visit me every weekends and I used to show her everything new Ive found around there. But there is a thing which about I will regret all the rest of my life. It is the time that Ive spent with my aunt. If I only could Id give everything to return these days even though for couple hours. Everything we did we did together, everything I had to share I shared with her and she treated the same way with me.
One of the best things I remember is how we went to the seaside everyday. It took us 15 minutes to walk there and we spend nearly whole day there. I liked to go there with her very much; weve had so much fun together. Well, also one of the reasons was my friend Tima, 6 years older than me, very cute and kind guy. He was at sixth class when he left the school to find a job at the building construction to help his mother financially. We met every summer during 5 years. I miss his friendship very much now.
The whole woods of the world wont be enough for me to describe all the good things we had because of they all were such a people and it was such a place that I even cant remember anything bad.
I was 12 when my parents sold the cottage. I believe my childhood ended that day.

Five Major Social Institu Essay Research Paper

Five Major Social Institu Essay Research Paper

Five Major Social Institu Essay, Research Paper

How has my personality been shaped by the five major instutions?

Firstly, my family is one of the most influential parts of my life. My

family has taught me all the values that I think that I would need in

life. I was not raised in an abusive family, which shapes my

personality by making me less aggressive towards my peers, and teaching

me that you can^t get your way through force, but by patience. I think

that my family has positively affected my life through treating me like

I^m a person, something that gets hurt easily.

Does education really affect the way I am? Maybe not directly, but

indirectly. Education is a means of teaching some values, but

that^s not education^s main purpose. Education teaches us about a great

many things. In kindergarten, you learn the alphabet and to count to

ten, in elementary school, you learn penmanship, and the four basic

ways to get seventy through a chain of addition, grammar, and we start

to want to do our own thing instead of everything that our parents

So, does education really affect our personality? No, it does not

affect us. But, our friends at school do. Our friends will be either

our good friend, or our worst enemy by the time we^re in high school.

Friends shape the most of our personality out of the family. Another

way that our friends have shaped the way that we are, is the way they

treat us. For example, your friends call you names, talk trash behind

your back, and generally talk trash around you now do you think that

you would have good self-esteem? I do not think that would be possible,

even if your parent are always calling you nice things, spoiling you

rotten, you would still have bad self-esteem.

The economy is a very essential part of our daily life, it shapes

what shape our town or city will be in. If the economy is poor, do

you think that it will draw a huge tourist crowd if the whole town or

city was a ghetto? I personally do not think so. I think that it would

turn out to be a heavily gang populated city, with many drug deals and

prostitution going on. Luckily I was not raised in the ghetto, not to

say that I am a particularly rich person, my family is just a little

off to the good to do side, but not really. The economy has shaped the

way that I am by where I was raised, I was for the majority of my young

life, raised in a major suburban neighborhood. Where the biggest thing

that happened around there was that my cat got ran over. I then moved

to a nice neighborhood with many kids. Where I made many friends and my

personality was then shaped.

Where does the government fit into my personality? The government

shapes the way I think about other people. If I was raised in a

monarch country, and I was royalty, I would think of peasants as dirty,

filthy people that are not worth my spit. If I was born in a communist

country, I would think that that every body deserves an equal amount of

every thing. But, I am in a democratic country, where everyone thinks

that the whole world orbits around them-self, and most other country^s

either hate or love. But, I also live in the freest country, where I am

free to make my own decisions. So, that affects the way I make my

choices, I think, ok, if I do this, and this, then I will get this, I

don^t think, ok, I can only do this, or this, so that this will happen.

It changes things quite a bit. I would say that this has positively

affected my life.

Religion, I think, has affected my life the most. Christianity has

taught me so many great things, that I can hardly comprehend it. I

think that Christianity is one of the best decisions that I could have

possibly made. Without Christ in my life, I would be a miserable little

druggie, who is a complete careless failure who does not even know what

year it is. But thanks to Gods loving kindness, I am not, I may not

always be happy, but who is? I think that Christianity has definitely

been a positive part of my life.

A TRUE FRIEND IS

A TRUE FRIEND IS.

The author's comments:

I know that this is something that if we can get a hold of the truth and learn how to handle it our world and our lives will be a better and easier and friendlier place. This is my opinion and the truth. I believe with all my heart. Hope it helps.

Ya’ll know that I’ve written about friendship before, but this time I’m gunna talk about the people…not the act.

What is a friend?
How do you treat them?
Do you have many? –if not…..have you figured out why?

Most people think that these questions are mainly for kids and their friends, but it’s a lifetime topic.

A friend is typically a non-relative that either shares the same interests as you, or you just enjoy being together so much that you don’t bother with the fact that you’re perhaps opposites. Normally if you are opposites, you won’t stay in a healthy relationship; you’ll start fighting, disagreeing on morals and standards, and just contrasting on everything! A true friend though, should have respect for your beliefs, so then you shouldn’t be bickering. Now if you completely disagree then you shouldn’t remain friends; you can stay cordial, but not friends. Example: I am a Christian. If I were to go to a public school which thankfully I do not, but if I were, I shouldn’t make strong ties with non-believers if my faith is new or if I struggle a lot; because those friends could cause me to stray away from my faith. If however I do have a strong faith and testimony which I believe I do, I would be able to have non-believing friends and keep my faith by standing up for it and calmly proving that friend wrong with Scripture.
A friend is someone who shares your emotion. If you’re sad and they love you, they’ll be sad if anything just at the fact that you’re sad! And the same for all the other emotions.
A friend sticketh closer than a brother(-Bible) as I have already written before. I mean really…who tells their siblings more than what they tell their friends? Not many. Not only is that how close they are, but it says that they stick with you closer than a brother. Well a brother is a brother till death! They can’t just stop being your sibling by doing anything technically, because they have your same blood, name, and DNA. (disownment doesn’t count) If that’s how close a brother is, just imagine how much closer a true friend is.
A friend is one who even through a fight as I have experienced still wants to call or txt or hang out. They just can’t stay mad at you forever. They love you and they need love back.
A friend is so many other things that I know that I could write for days in length with my personal experiences and examples and truths that I won’t….for your sakes lol.

Well now that we know what a friend is, how do you treat them? Is your idea of a friend becoming the leader of your little clique and having people who follow you around because you’re cool, pretty, smart, buff, whatever and not even care about who you guys really are? That’s just ludicrous! And not true friendship at all! The Bible says to treat others as you would have them to treat you. Now if you would like them to treat you the way a ruthless leader of a clique normally does than you’ve got some problems. I haven’t met anyone who’s ever wanted to be treated that way. The way you should treat your friends is by telling them things about them that make you like them and make you want to be their friend. You should treat them with respect, love, compassion, honesty, and conductive criticism. If you would want your friend to help you mature and grow then you should do the same for them.
This is probably the most difficult question to speak the truth about amongst the three. Think about it….do you have many friends? If so are they the right kind of friends? Friends that love you and you love them; friends that call when they haven’t heard from you in a couple of days or so; friends who still talk to you even when you’ve had a fight. If so then you must be somewhat of a good person lol and you are blessed. Your reward from God is true, good friends. If you don’t have many….I need to ask why? Look at your life and incidents where you’ve been around people and go through the scenario. Did you treat them the way you’d have wanted to be treated? Did you choose the right crowd of people? And ask any more questions that fit the specific scenario. If you did any of these wrong then…there’s your answer as to why you only have a few if any friends. I’m sorry to say, but it’s true…if you’re a jerk to people you’re not going to be liked. Would you like someone who was a jerk to you? I should hope not….

I hope these commentaries on these questions have helped. I hope you take my advice and use it. If you would like me to pray for you just comment on this and ask and I will be glad to pray for you. Some of you may be like ‘ok I agree with that so I’ll use that, but oh that’s Bible stuff…I…I. I won’t believe that.’ Well I want to ask this and I want you to think about it very hard.
Just because you don’t believe in the Bible, don’t you agree that it seems logical? Doesn’t it make sense? Doesn’t it seem like it would work?
Please think about it and just give it a try…if it works, maybe even consider giving God a try. I’m here for any more advice about anything or any questions you may have. (my dad is a pastor so I’m well knowledge lol)

I honestly have no idea what you article is about because to be 100% honest I didn't read it because in the first sentence (the one I read) there was a lot of grammatical errors. I'm not trying to be mean but this is a literary website and I think you should treat these articles like you would a school paper, and spell correctly.

I understand where you're coming from, but this was meant as an argumentative paper so i wrote it the way I would have argued it in person not as an actual paper.
