Spelling ea words (a free lesson with printables!)

Did you know that I’m creating a giant resource for teaching spelling in a hands-on, meaningful way? It follows the principles of Word Study — an approach to teaching that allows each child to work at his or her own developmental level. Word Study involves sorting words by pattern, studying the relationships between words, and using hands-on activities like word sorts and games to internalize the spellings.

Because my Six is learning long vowel pattern words, that’s the stage of spelling that I’m starting with. Word Study calls it the Within Word Pattern stage. Here are the lessons we’ve shared so far:

This week’s sort was a little tricky — it involved spelling ea words. But not just the ones that follow that old spelling rule, “When two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking.” Word Study moves beyond those unreliable rules and teaches kids to sort words by pattern. You’d be surprised how many words break that rule!

Here was our word sort (get it in the pack at the end of the post). You’ll notice we have some plain old short e words (like vest and shell ) mixed in. Why? Kids sort the words based on pattern. They see that some short e words spell the vowel sound with just an e. But others are tricky and add in that a (as in bread and dread ).

Often my daughter can figure out the sort without me telling it to her – but this one was tricky. We sorted the words into three columns:

1) words that spell short e with “e”
2) words that spell short e with “ea”
3) words that spell long e with “ea”

When teaching Word Study, it’s important to give your child plenty of practice sorting the words. Visit a post from This Reading Mama for many different ways to sort words .

Every week, we include at least one spelling game in our Word Study lessons. Since we did this lesson during a cold Midwest winter, I created a winter-themed spelling game (learn more about it here). My daughter loved Snowball Spelling because it gave her the extra challenge of spelling some winter words alongside her spelling words.

Besides sorting the words and playing games, I often add a pencil and paper component to our lessons. This time I created a crossword puzzle. My daughter, who loves word searches, wasn’t too excited about this one. But I wanted her to think about the words’ meanings as well as give her practice writing them (get it in the printable pack below).


Another activity we did was a new one – I found the idea over at Teach Mama’s fabulous post, 20+ Ways to Learn Spelling Words. I created a document that allowed my daughter to spell the words on staircases — you can see what I mean in the image above. (I corrected the errors and included this in your pack as well.)

After about a week of sorting and spelling activities, I gave my daughter a test. She did great! We’ll soon be moving on to our next lesson: short and long i words.

Software Orientation
  • You can work more efficiently by basing many of your new documents on templates that Word provides—many choices are available for working with templates, as shown below.

Working with Templates
  • A template is a master document with predefined page layout, fonts, margins, and styles that is used to create new documents that will share the same basic formatting.
  • Using templates keeps you from having to recreate documents such as interoffice memorandums, monthly newsletters that you share with employees, recordings of minutes from meetings, and more.

  • In Backstage, the New command allows you to work with templates that are already installed, search for a template online, open a blank template, or create your own template.

    Working With Templates
    • You can choose from many different categories of templates, such as letters, memos, resumes, flyers, forms, and more.
  • Some templates are preinstalled with Word and there are more options available online.

  • Templates are reusable even if you saved the document with a different file name.

  • In the following exercise, you will locate an installed template.

    Step-by-Step: Locate a Template Installed on Your Computer
    • If necessary, before you begin these steps, launch Word.
  • Click the File tab, then select New.

  • In the Available Templates categories, click SampleTemplates. Sample Templates are stored on your computer with many different options from which to select.

  • Scroll down and click OriginFax. A preview of the template appears in the right pane, as shown on the next slide. Notice that the default setting is Document. Templates created will open as a document based on the template selected and will affect only that document. If you change the radio button to Templates, it will allow you to create your own personal template based on an existing template or you can create your own and save it in the Templates folder for easy retrieval.

    Step-by-Step: Locate a Template Installed on Your Computer
    • To see more templates, use the vertical scroll bar to scroll through the list and click to preview.
  • Select the Oriel Reportthen click Create. The report is displayed on your screen. Notice that this document contains features covered in previous lessons such as placeholders, quotes text boxes, and styles.

  • CLOSE; do not save the report.

  • LEAVE the program open for the next exercise.

    Finding Templates on the Internet
    • Microsoft offers numerous templates online and these are also available from third-party providers, as well as other users in the community.
  • You can select from a category using the Office.com Templates section or search for a template using the Search bar and searching by keywords.

  • You can also use the Help feature and search for additional information on templates on your computer or online. You must be connected to the Internet to search for templates online.

  • In the following exercise, you will select a template category and view a listing of templates online.

    Step-by-Step: Find Templates on the Internet
    • Click the File tab, then New.
  • In the Office.comTemplatesection, click Agendas. Notice the additional agenda templates available.

  • Locate Agenda (Capsules design) and click on it to preview. The preview pane displays download size and the user rating for that template in the upper right pane as shown above. The agenda is predesigned with bullets and is ready to use.

    Step-by-Step: Find Templates on the Internet
    • Below the Available Templates, click the Homebutton. In the Office.com Templates section, click the Flyers category and notice the subcategories options.
  • Click the Event flyers folder to see the templates in that subcategory and scroll and preview.

  • In the Search Office.com for templates box, key marketing and press Enter. You can search for templates in the search box.

  • Click Event marketingbrochure (Accessory design) and click Download or double-click. View the template and close the document without saving.
