Dominic Cole’s IELTS Blog The threat of nuclear weapons maintains world peace. Nuclear power provides cheap and clean energy. The benefits of nuclear technology far outweigh the disadvantages. Do you agree or disagree? Give reasons for your answer. One question that has caused a great deal of controversy over the years is nuclear technology. Although it offers a number of advantages in world peace and green power, it is also a dangerous technology. In this essay I intend to show how these benefits counterbalance that disadvantage. The opponents of nuclear power generally base their arguments on the danger it represents to the world. There are two main dangers: the risk of nuclear warfare and the nuclear disasters. The danger of nuclear war is obvious and if one thinks about Chernobyl, it is easy to understand why people are worried about nuclear power, as it can cause major suffering. There are, however, good reasons for believing that nuclear technology is generally advantageous. The first of these is that there has not been a major world conflict since the invention of nuclear weapons. While there have been wars, they have not been on the same scale as the Second World War. It is possible to say that the world is a safer place because of nuclear weapons. The other most significant benefit relates to the environment. Perhaps the greatest danger facing our world today is a combination of global warming and the greenhouse effect. This danger is caused partly by burning fossil fuels which leads to our polluted atmosphere. Nuclear power, however, is a much greener alternative which does not have such negative effects. Furthermore, in the last 50 years there have not been too many nuclear disasters and many experts claim that it is in fact a safe technology. In conclusion I would say that nuclear technology is better than the current alternatives. However, I also believe we should keep looking for ways to make it safer. We have been living in the nuclear age now for over half a century. Since the first atomic bombs were developed, nuclear technology has provided governments with the ability to totally destroy the planet. Yet the technology has been put to positive use as an energy source and in certain areas of medicine. To what extent is nuclear technology a danger to life on Earth? What are the benefits and risks associated with its use?

How many words? How long?

One Possible Solution: (Nothing is perfect! Please take this as an example only!)

This resource hasn't been reviewed. Therefore, it might need lots of improvements. The reason this happened is we are implementing more features for this website. Therefore, you need to use it with caution.

Technology is always playing a prime role for every countries development, in recent past all countries were concentrating on nuclear technology because of its various advantages. Everything had two sides, nuclear energy is not an exception though.

When nuclear bomb was deployed first time during world war, it destroyed the whole landscape of that state. Even now, people are suffering with radiation which was created fifty years ago. The human power hunger to be the leader of world created many problems.

However, we being a intelligent creature in the world, always learn and adopt from mistakes. The same happened in the nuclear technology enhancement. Seeking to put past acrimony behind, now we have molded a world most dangerous technology to most useful technology.

Since last few decades, the development in making use of nuclear technology has widen its wings. For example, in developed countries fifty percentage of electricity is generated by nuclear power. In medical technology it is useful for killing cancer cells with radiation which are emitted by nuclear reaction.

Although, there are many advantages, the recent studies have identified few disadvantages of nuclear technology. The people who are staying near nuclear power plant are affected by nuclear radiations which in turn affecting human reproductive system. Sorroundings of nuclear power plant are getting polluted by radiation.

To sum up, I agree that nuclear power has many benifits, at the same time it has drawbacks too. So. we should concentrate on how to mitigate side affects of nuclear technology and make use of its power more effectively.

IELTS Essay: Nuclear Weapons Have Made This World Safe to Live

Nuclear Weapons Have Made This World Safe to Live

If we carefully analyze Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs, every human being living in this world needs safety and security for his loved ones and for himself, just after their basic necessity of eating and other physical needs have been fulfilled. Initially, humans were afraid of different animals and with the passage of time, as humans became modern they became afraid of their fellow humans. This happened due to the human character of ruling human on other humans and enjoying might is right situation. History is full of these examples that how humans ruled other humans and how they exercised their brutality on others. How they killed others just for his safety.

Initially swords were the primary weapons with human beings for their safety, but as human civilization proceeded so was the weapon technology and introduction of sulphur changed the weapons and their capacity of destruction, further when nuclear weapons were invented by human beings, they were named as weapon of mass destruction. History shows that how USA dropped two atomic bombs on two Japanese cities in World War II. And how much destruction they caused to the cities and humans.

Let’s see how nuclear weapons work; it is continuous process in which atomic particles are converted in to huge amount of energy with the bombardment of protons. The process is called Nuclear Fusion process and the place where this process takes place is called Nuclear Reactor. If the fusion goes wrong hazardous nuclear radiations emitted that cause’s terrible impact on human life.

If we think optimistically we can use this huge amount of energy in some constructive ways, instead of become a part of nuclear weapons assortment race. We can generate cheap electricity, and this could contribute to economic development.

Now if we look at our territory, keeping nuclear weapons is mandatory for us, it is cause of balance of power. Not all the time weapons are bad but for some reasons they are necessary for our own safety. We have to notify our enemy about our powers so that he may think twice before taking any step towards us.

Relying on fossil fuels such oil and coal for our energy needs is becoming increasingly impractical. The rising cost and the the decreasing supply of these fuels along the concerns about the global warming they cause, means we must find an alternative. The only realistic alternative is nuclear energy. To what extent do yoe agree or disagree?

One of the greatest problems we confront these days is the demand supply mismatch. This breeds true in the case of energy sources which are dwindling day by day. Now, the question is whether to use alternative source of energy over fossil fuels. From my viewpoint, nuclear power should not be counted upon extensively for various reasons.

Nowadays, atomic power is often deemed as the mightiest a source of energy, but it is very essential to consider its repercussions before venturing into such a crucial mission. The hazardous effects of nuclear power is ceaseless and the radiation released around the vicinity of nuclear plants lasts for thousands of years. Japan's nuclear power plant explosion this year owing to earth quakes and Chernobyl nuclear disaster are the best illustrations of nuclear catastrophe. The hangovers of this perpetual calamities are evidenced by physical deformities of newborn children and incidences of various forms of malignancies in the affected areas.

Moreover, uranium, an element used for nuclear fission is not a renewable source of energy. The opponents claim that, its benefits can be availed for hundreds of years. In this context, people are becoming so covetuous without rethinking about posterity. Even, the so called,'fossil fuels'are non renewable. It is high time to avert to renewable energy sources such as water,solar,geo-thermal, wind and so on. Eventhough, the viability of the aforementioned energy sources are diminutive, we must harness the available resources extensively.

However,it is widely acknowledged that, the nuclear energy is potent enough to quench the energy needs of voracious people. Besides it is inexpensive and produces very less waste, but nobody could counteract its negative impact on people's life.

The put it in a nutshell, atomic energy is not the best alternative to our energy problem. So let us exploit the renewable sources to the fullet potential before diverging into atomic power.

IELTS Essay Sample Answer # Nuclear Technology - IELTS Band 7

IELTS Essay Sample Answer # Nuclear Technology

You should spend 40 minutes on this task.

Nuclear technology should be used for constructive purposes.

Write at least 250 words.

Nuclear technology has been one of the most powerful invention of the 20th century but most people are afraid to use it because of the dangers associated with its use. Though it is true that nuclear weapons pose the greatest threat to life, just like any other invention, it also has its positive side.

Firstly, most of the countries of the world are facing energy crisis and don’t have much gas or electricity to provide to its country people. As a result, they import it from other countries, making it difficult to pay for other developments. Nuclear power can be a great source for energy for these countries and can be a very effective solution for them to improve their life standard and overall economic status.

Secondly, nuclear technology is a much more available and cleaner solution to our possible energy and environmental crisis. At the current level of technology, the discovered nuclear supply will be enough to sustain the earth for more than a century. Its generation, if properly operated, produces nothing other than heat, so it is considered super clean.

However,in the midst of globalization, among the many national frontiers nuclear technology and power pose the greatest threat. Improper use of his powerful technological gizmo, could lead to catastrophic effects.

Overall, just like a knife does not kills people, it is the individual who decides whether he/she wants to use it for killing people or cutting vegetables. Similarly, nuclear power has its own positives and negatives and it is the responsibility of the world powers to make sure it is used positively.

“The threat of nuclear weapons maintains world peace. Nuclear power provides cheap and clean energy. The benefits of nuclear technology far outweigh the disadvantages.

To what extent do you agree or essay disagree?”

Advances in nuclear processing have gave us a low cost energy ielts essay nuclear power source, but at the same time nuclear power can be used against human being. There are several advantages of exploiting nuclear energy, for example, very low CO2 footprint, high energy capacity and low costs to consumer compared to other energy sources. On the other hand, nuclear power has serious drawbacks, for instance, threats of nuclear war, disastrous power plant failures and lack of proper radioactive waste degradation technology.

First of all, nuclear energy is one of the cleanest in terms of carbon dioxide production, and for decades it has been outcompeted conventional fossil fuel energy which is directly responsible for greenhouse effect power nowadays. In addition, nuclear raw material contains far more Joules per kilogram of fuel than energy sources like hydrogen, shale gas or petroleum. Furthermore, previously mentioned aspects make nuclear energy as one of the cheapest options for nation’s energy politics due to the fact that raw materials are widely abundant and accessible.

Secondly, in recent decade society is highly concerned about major drawbacks of nuclear power, especially growth of nuclear stocks in Middle East, as they can be used for nuclear weapon production and could ignite nuclear war. Another disadvantage is raising amount of nuclear waste that comes from nuclear power plants. Due to the fact that it is very expensive and in some cases even impossible to degrade radioactive waste, most of the countries have decided just to collect and store it for unknown period of time in underground warehouses. Although several scientific groups are pursuing a sustainable disposal technology for decades, there has not been a significant progress. In my opinion, probably the biggest threat for the society is nuclear power plant failures that could lead to disastrous consequences both to environment and human being.

To holi conclude, I disagree that the benefits of nuclear technology far outweigh the disadvantages. I think, significant advances in nuclear processing technology are needed to safely exploit nuclear energy.

IELTS Essays: How to write introductions - Репетитор английского языка - авторский сайт

IELTS Essays: How to write introductions What is a relevant introduction?

It is the one that follows the task to the letter. It covers ALL the task parts and doesn’t add unnecessary information. If the task asks one’s opinion, then the introduction gives it briefly. If the task asks reasons and solutions, then both are mentioned in the introduction.

An introduction that goes off-topic can be too general or too specific. E.g. in case the topic requires you to write about British retired people, you can’t write about European people or Russian people. If the topic asks you about teenagers, you can’t write about just schoolchildren.

What is a logical introduction?

It is the one that sets your position (don’t mistake your position with your opinion) that will be followed throughout the essay. You introduction needs to be logically connected with all the body paragraphs and the conclusion. E.g. if your essay is about reasons and solutions, and you mention only reasons in the introduction, then the essay loses its logical sequence a bit.

What is a concise introduction?

It is short (2-3 sentences) and understandable. The main reason why I recommend short introductions is that this way you will have more opportunities to develop your arguments in the essay body and to provide more relevant examples. When the introduction is too long, students often fail to extend their ideas in paragraphs, for which reason their essays look too general.

How to write an introduction.

Paraphrase the first sentence or two sentences before the task itself as close as possible.
Step 2

Answer the questions in the task briefly.

It’s as simple as that!

Now let’s analyse some examples.

The threat of nuclear weapons maintains world peace. Nuclear power provides cheap and clean energy. The benefits of nuclear technology far outweigh the disadvantages. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

There is an ongoing debate in society about nuclear technology. In my opinion, it is dangerous and people in the world are not yet ready to use it. I believe that nuclear powers stations should be banned.

Over the last century, the presence of nuclear arms has prevented many countries from starting a war. Furthermore, atomic technology has provided the world with inexpensive energy with zero carbon dioxide emission. Personally, I would argue that the merits of the technology outbalance the demerits.

Introduction 3
Over the last decades the humanity is using nuclear energy for military and peaceful purposes. It has both, benefits and drawbacks.
- - - - -

The first introduction is off-topic. The task is not to write the opinion about nuclear power stations, but to weigh advantages, disadvantages and decide if there are more benefits or drawbacks.

The second introduction is the closest to the task. It paraphrases the first part and answers the question.

The third introduction is close to the topic, but it gives no answer whether there are more advantages or disadvantages.

Now you can check your understanding by taking a quiz.

3. Question

Select the best introduction

Task: In recent years, farming practices have changed to include methods such as factory farming and the use of technology to improve crops. Some people believe these developments are necessary, while others regard them as dangerous and advocate a return to more traditional farming methods. Discuss both points of view and give your own opinion.

  • Agriculture is experiencing rapid progress with genetic engineering and other modern technologies. Such practices have both, benefits and drawbacks.
  • Over the last years, agriculture has become a controversial issue. The proponents of modern technologies claim that new farming methods can save the humanity, whereas their opponents support the return to conventional farming due to potential risks.
  • Nowadays non-conventional agriculture technologies are being widely used. Although many individuals maintain that these are essential for humanity, their opponents point out potential haggards and insist on using conventional farming. Personally, I subscribe to the first viewpoint.

The third introduction is the best one. It paraphrases the task and mentions all its parts (two viewpoints plus opinion). The first introduction is off-topic. The second introduction is quite good, but it doesn’t mention the author’s opinion.
